Hawks showing signs of life

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

CHICAGO (AP) -- Sitting two games as a healthy scratch last week might have lit a fire under Chicago Blackhawks winger Eric Daze.

Tony Amonte
Tony Amonte is denied here, but later scored his team-high eighth goal of the season in the Hawks' win over Anaheim.

Daze, who didn't play at Minnesota last Sunday and in Boston Thursday, scored the game-winning goal early in the third period as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 4-2 Sunday night.

After intercepting a weak clearing attempt by Anaheim's German Titov, Daze scored from the left circle at 5:43 of the third and snapped a 2-2 tie.

"That's the best I've seen him play this year," said Chicago coach Alpo Suhonen, whose team posted consecutive victories for the first time this season.

"I've been skating and I've been put on right wing where I feel more natural," Daze said. "I think in Detroit (a 6-1 Chicago win Friday), I was coming pretty well."

Daze's goal was only his second this season. It also was his second point. A week ago, he announced he wanted the Blackhawks to trade him.

Steve Sullivan, who had two assists, added an empty-net goal with 36 seconds left and had two assists. Michael Nylander and Tony Amonte also scored for Chicago, which has won three of its last four games.

"This is some of the best hockey I've seen us play in a long time," Amonte said. "It's nice to see us going."

Teemu Selanne and Marty McInnis scored for Anaheim, which is winless in its last four games (0-2-2).

"Those guys were one step ahead of us," Selanne said. "We played a hard game last night and took too many penalties. That killed our energy."

Guy Hebert started in goal for Anaheim, but was replaced after just 15 seconds by Dominic Roussel, who faced all 37 Chicago shots. Anaheim coach Craig Hartsburg had intended to start Roussel, but accidentally circled Hebert's name on the lineup card.

Blackhawks starter Jocelyn Thibault finished with 15 saves.

Nylander opened the scoring 1:51 in when he skated, unchecked, from the right wing boards and across the slot.

Selanne tied it at 1 with 4:11 left in the first. After circling the Chicago net, he lofted a backhander over Thibault's shoulder.

McInnis gave Anaheim a 2-1 lead at 4:40 of the second, sliding in a backhander from the goal line during a pile up in the crease.

Amonte tied it just over two minutes later when he one-timed a power-play goal from 10 feet.

Daze's scored the game-winner from the left circle at 5:43 of the third after picking off Titov's clearing attempt.

"It's not what he should've done," Hartsburg said of Titov's turnover. "He's a veteran player and knows what to do with the puck in that situation."

Game notes
Selanne has six goals and six assists in his last 12 games. ...Chicago's line of Nylander, Sullivan and Dean McAmmond has been hot. Sullivan, has four goals and three assists in his last four games. Nylander has three goals and two assists over the same span. ...Sunday night's crowd was announced as 13,360, but the 20,500-seat United Center was barely half full.
