Blues make Turek earn his paycheck

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Roman Turek has been saying all year that he would like more work. The St. Louis Blues goalie finally got his wish Saturday.

Turek faced 26 shots, including seven in overtime, as he helped preserve a 1-1 tie with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and extend the Blues' unbeaten streak to six games.

"I felt I played well tonight," Turek said. "It's disappointing because they tied the game with two minutes (left). But they got a lot of good scoring chances in overtime, so it was good to get the point."

Fredrik Olausson ruined Turek's shutout when he scored on a one-timer with 1:58 remaining.

Anaheim had managed only two shots during the first 18 minutes of the third period, until Kip Miller got control of the puck behind the net. Miller centered to Olausson moving in from the point, and he beat Turek with a slap shot.

Turek said he was pretty much at Olausson's mercy.

"I could not move," said Turek, who was boxed in by Blues defenseman Marc Bergevin. "He hit the the post and it went in. It was a good shot."

Anaheim coach Craig Hartsburg was happy to skip town with a point.

"They're a tough team to play against in this building," he said. "I thought we hung in there and we cetainly capitalized on a big (chance) in the end to get a point."

After going 29-0-0 to start the season when leading after two periods, the league-leading Blues have blown third-period advantages in two consecutive games. St. Louis allowed two third-period goals in Thursday's 2-2 tie with Vancouver.

Pavol Demitra provided the offense for the Blues with his 27th goal. Michal Handzus batted the puck to Demitra at center ice and he shot through Guy Hebert's pads from just inside the blue line at 10:43 of the second period.

"When I get a puck I try to put it on net," Demitra said. "You never know what can happen."

In the last 19 games, the line of Demitra, Handzus and Lubos Bartecko has recorded 58 points.

The tie gives St. Louis 95 points, four more than New Jersey and Detroit. The Devils were to play in Washington later Saturday, while the Red Wings had the day off.

Hebert made 28 saves for Anaheim but left with 1:11 remaining in overtime when he was run over by teammate Paul Kariya. Dominic Roussel finished the game.

"It was a good, tight, tough hockey game and now we have to move on to the next one," Hartsburg said.

Anaheim outshot the Blues 7-0 in overtime, finishing the game on the power play when referee Dan O'Halloran called Bergevin for interference at 3:16. The Blues have killed off 48 of the last 50 power play opportunities they have faced.
