PHOENIX (AP) -- Sean Burke thinks Phoenix has found a recipe for success: stick to basics on defense.

The Coyotes did just that Saturday night, allowing Burke to register his second straight shutout, and Trevor Letowski scored twice in a 5-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Burke, who blanked the New York Islanders 5-0 Thursday night, stopped 26 shots in earning his 22nd career shutout.

"We've been playing good in front of our own net," Burke said. "We've made the simple play. I don't think we need to get fancy in our end. I think the last couple games, we've just made some smart plays. We've tried not to get ourselves running around and played a little more disciplined. I think it's helped us a lot."

Letowski said the Coyotes also have been helped the last week by recent trades that brought them defenseman Lyle Odelein and right wing Mikael Renberg.

"I think those fresh faces in the room really make a difference," said Letowski, a rookie who has 16 goals. "Lyle has really made a presence out there. Mikael is also creating a lot of things out there. He brings so much speed to the team."

Renberg scored Saturday, as did Juha Ylonen and Jeremy Roenick.

The Canucks didn't really pressure Burke much until the third period, when they got off 11 shots on goal.

Canucks center Mark Messier said his team looked tired in its third straight road game.

"First of all, we don't want to make any excuses, because if you start making excuses, I think, it gives everybody an easy way out," Messier said. "We didn't play well enough to win tonight, obviously. Our schedule has been tough, no question about it. I think when you see a team play like we did as a group tonight it's usually fatigue. It's not one guy or two guys."

Ylonen scored 32 seconds into the game on a wrist shot from the left circle. There was traffic in front of goalie Felix Potvin and the puck flew past his glove side.

Roenick put the Coyotes up 2-0 16:20 in with his 32nd goal. Shane Doan carried the puck up ice along the left boards and found Roenick with a pass between the circles.

The Coyotes' third goal came 6:30 into the second. Greg Adams was checked off the puck by defensemen Brent Sopel and Murray Baron, and Letowski slid the loose puck past Potvin.

Phoenix made it 4-0 just 36 seconds later when Renberg scored his first goal with the Coyotes. The goal sent Potvin, who only stopped 10 of 14 shots, to the bench in favor of Garth Snow.

Letowski got his second goal, with Phoenix short-handed, 16:39 into the second to finish the scoring.
