About the play: The Patriots must make the double slant work against Miami's pressure defense. This play gets the ball out of Drew Bledsoe's hand quickly without allowing the fast Dolphins defense to react. Bledsoe will take a three-step drop and eyeball the free safety. He will work to the side away from the safety rotation. Once Bledsoe decides which side to work, he will then start inside to outside. If the inside receiver crosses the face of his cover guy, he will throw the slant there. If the coverage takes away the inside receiver, then Bledsoe will throw on time and in rhythm to the outside receiver, who must win his matchup and give Bledsoe a throwing lane. These slants hit between six to eight yards. Keys to the play: A great read by Bledsoe and an accurate throw. This throw has to be on the front shoulder and low to the body. If the throw is good, it gives the receiver a chance to run after the catch. A high throw could be intercepted. A low throw will at least protect the receiver from a big hit. Critical player: All the receivers must keep their distance between each other. They can't crowd and must stay spread out. They also must get an inside release. The best way to get inside is to sell the outside release.
Defensive strategy: The best way to defense the slants is to play hard inside coverage and make the receivers go around, which makes the receiver
late and takes away the play. | ALSO SEE Week 11 previews
