Players' status for Rose Bowl unknown Associated Press
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Less than two weeks before Purdue's
appearance in the Rose Bowl, five freshman football players were
cited for underage drinking.
Starting safety Stuart Schweigert was cited along with Deaunte
Ferrell, David Owen, Kelly Butler and Doug Swann during a traffic
stop Wednesday night.
A Purdue volleyball player, Laura St. John,
also was cited for illegal consumption of alcohol.
Purdue coach Joe Tiller said he did not know if the police
action would impact the players' status for the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl
against Washington.
"It's too early to tell," Tiller said Friday after returning
from a recruiting trip. "Since we're into a recruiting weekend, I
saw the five knuckleheads and told them to get out of here and I'd
see them the first part of the week. So I'll deal with it then."
Schweigert, the Big Ten's freshman of the year, took a portable
Breathalyzer test that showed his blood-alcohol content was below
Indiana's legal limit of .10 percent.
The safety was arrested in June in his hometown of Saginaw,
Mich., on charges of possession of alcohol while driving and giving
false identification. His blood-alcohol content at the time was
below Michigan's legal limit.
