Closer has no problems after throwing 55 pitches

ESPN.com news services

Anaheim Angels: Closer Troy Percival, out with a hip injury, reported no problems after throwing 55 pitches during a 12-minute bullpen session Saturday.

It was the first time Percival has thrown off the mound since going on the 15-day disabled May 23.

"I've got zero problems with my arm and my hip feels fine after throwing today," Percival said.

Percival is scheduled to throw again Sunday and pitch in a simulated game Wednesday. Barring any setbacks, he might be ready to be activated when eligible to come off the DL.

"There's some checkpoints he has to clear,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "This was a big one."

Percival, the Angels' career saves leader with 257, had an MRI exam this month that revealed a strain of the gluteus muscle and degenerative changes in the hip joint.

Montreal Expos: The Expos on Saturday placed right-hander Zach Day on the 15-day disabled list -- retroactive to May 29 -- with an inflamed right shoulder.

Day is 4-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 11 starts. He pitched a three-hitter at Milwaukee on May 1 for his first career shutout.

Right-handed pitcher Sun-Woo Kim has been recalled from Triple-A Edmonton to fill Day's spot on the roster.

Kim, who was 5-3 with a 4.73 ERA in 10 starts for Edmonton, will join the team in Puerto Rico when Montreal opens a three-game series against Anaheim on Tuesday.

New York Mets: Left-hander Mike Stanton was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a swollen left knee and recalled lefty Mike Bacsik from Triple-A Norfolk.

Stanton has been bothered by the knee for about two weeks and hasn't pitched since May 21 against Philadelphia. The move is retroactive to May 22 and Stanton is eligible to come off the disabled list next Friday.

"It never bothers me when I walk around. The problem has been when I go to pitch I can't push off,'' he said. "I can't take the torque when I go to home plate. I'm a guy who uses a lot of legs. This is not something I can pitch with.''

Stanton has had his knee drained twice as well as an MRI and X-rays. He said doctors haven't been able to pinpoint the cause of the injury.

"The last time out there I thought more about my knee than getting hitters out,'' he said. "That doesn't help anyone.''

Stanton is 2-3 with a 5.03 ERA in 23 relief appearances this year.

Houston Astros: The Astros activated right-hander Roy Oswalt from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and sent reliever Brandon Puffer to Triple-A New Orleans.

Oswalt, 3-4 with a 3.68 ERA in nine games, had been on the DL with a strained right groin. He started Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs.

Puffer was 0-0 with a 4.95 ERA in 20 innings over 11 relief appearances.
