St. Louis outfielder will have MRI on rib Friday

ESPN.com news services

St. Louis Cardinals: Jim Edmonds will have an MRI Friday to determine if he has any torn rib cartilage.

While in some pain Thursday, Edmonds said he felt better than he thought he would after bruising his ribs catching a ball in Wednesday's game with Houston. He has no timetable for his return to the lineup.

"I fell better than I expected I would," Edmonds said. "I'm hopeful I won't have to go on the disabled list but you never know. I don't know."

Edmonds said he doesn't believe his injury is similar to the one pitcher Woody Williams had last season, when he was out for three months with a strained muscle on his left side.

"I don't think it's anything muscular," Edmonds said. "It's not like what Woody had."

Edmonds, a Gold Glove center fielder, severely bruised his ribs diving for a ball in the second inning. Edmonds robbed Brad Ausmus of a hit when he snared a sinking liner in shallow center.

Also Thursday, Cardinals left-handed reliever Lance Painter said he will be going to extended spring training Sunday in Florida after pitching "25 to 30 pitches" to hitters on Friday at Busch Stadium. Painter tore the tendon above his right hamstring in an April 10 game against Colorado.

Houston Astros: The Astros on Thursday placed outfielder Richard Hidalgo on the 15-day disabled list.

The move was retroactive to May 23, meaning Hidalgo can be activated starting June 7.

Tests for mononucleosis were negative, general manager Gerry Hunsicker said. Hidalgo has been diagnosed with a "mono-like virus."

Hidalgo has not played for the Astros since May 22. He was scratched from the lineup last Friday and was admitted to The Methodist Hospital of Houston with tonsillitis and a high fever. He spent three nights in the hospital before being discharged Monday.

Hidalgo is hitting .299 in 46 games this season with seven home runs and 25 RBI.

The Astros plan to purchase the contract of outfielder Colin Porter from Triple-A New Orleans, Hunsicker said. Porter will join the Astros on Friday in Chicago where Houston will begin a three-game series.

Porter has hit .318 with three home runs and 21 RBI in 43 games for New Orleans.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays: John Rocker is staying with the Devil Rays, just not on their major league roster.

Rocker, who had been pitching for Double-A Orlando, was designated for assignment on Tuesday. He cleared waivers, signed a minor league contract Thursday and will rejoin Orlando.

The left-hander made two appearances earlier this season for the Devil Rays, allowing one run, two hits and three walks in one inning.

In Rocker's first full major league season, 1999, he had 38 saves as the Atlanta Braves went to the World Series. After that season, he made disparaging remarks about gays, minorities and others in a Sports Illustrated article. His career went into a tailspin after he was traded to Cleveland in June 2001.

Rocker appeared in eight games for Orlando, giving up nine runs, 10 hits and 10 walks over nine innings. He was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Carlos Reyes, called up from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday.

Oakland Athletics: Ron Gant, a two-time All-Star outfielder with 321 career home runs, was designated for assignment Thursday by the Athletics.

The 15-year veteran, who signed with the A's in spring training after playing last season for San Diego, had appeared in 17 games and hit .146 with one homer and four RBI.

Oakland recalled Billy McMillon, hitting .333 with eight homers and 35 RBI at Triple-A Sacramento. The A's have 10 days to trade Gant or place him on waivers.

Gant, 38, has played for nine teams, spending most of his career with the Atlanta Braves, where he played in the World Series in 1991 and '92. He was selected to the All-Star team with Atlanta in 1992 and Cincinnati in 1995.

Gant has a .256 career average, 1,651 hits, 321 homers and 1,008 RBIs. Oakland manager Ken Macha gave him the news Thursday morning before the team got to the park.

"I spent a lot of time making sure I handled it properly," he said. "I wanted to do it at the hotel, in a comfortable situation.

McMillon had a .401 on-base percentage and a .5565 slugging percentage in 38 games for Sacramento. In 2001, he batted .293 in 20 games with the A's before a shoulder injury ended his season in July.

San Diego Padres: Left-hander Randy Keisler was sent outright to Triple-A Portland on Thursday by San Diego after lasting only three innings in each of his two starts for the Padres.

The Padres filled the roster spot by claiming right-hander Scott Linebrink off waivers from the Houston Astros.

Keisler (0-1, 12.00 ERA) had been scheduled to start Friday night against Arizona in the opener of a four-game series. The Padres did not say who will take his place.

Keisler signed a minor league contract with the Padres on Feb. 15. He was out of baseball last season, recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder.

Keisler spent parts of the previous two seasons with the New York Yankees.

Linebrink (1-1, 4.26 ERA) appeared in nine games for the Astros, including six starts, before being designated for assignment on Saturday.

Toronto Blue Jays:

Blue Jays right-hander Justin Miller will miss the rest of the season after surgery Thursday on his right shoulder.

"He won't throw or have any activity for three months. If all goes well he should be ready for spring training," Toronto manager Carlos Tosca said.

Miller hasn't played for the Blue Jays this season because of shoulder soreness. He went 9-5 with a 5.54 ERA in 25 games, including 18 starts for Toronto last season.

Texas Rangers: The Rangers called up right-hander Reynaldo Garcia from Triple-A Oklahoma on Thursday, making room for him by assigning Alan Benes to Oklahoma.

Benes was 0-3 with a 11.40 earned-run average in four starts with the Rangers, who acquired him from the Chicago Cubs on May 9. The righthander was the starter and loser on Wednesday at Tampa Bay, giving up six hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Garcia is 2-2 with a 4.73 ERA in nine games, including three starts at Oklahoma. In six relief appearances, Garcia has a 0.59 ERA, giving up one earned run in 15 1/3 innings. The Rangers said he would be in uniform for Thursday night's game in Baltimore.

Also, the Rangers said that infielder Jeff Pickler and outfielder Paul Ottavina have cleared outright waivers. Pickler was assigned outright to Oklahoma and Ottavina was assigned outright to Double-A Frisco.

Both had been on option to those clubs.
