Hernandez out with inflammation in elbow

ESPN.com news services

Kansas City Royals: Pitcher Runelvys Hernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with inflammation in his right elbow.

The move was made retroactive to May 17. Right-hander Brad Voyles, who has been up with the Royals the last two seasons, was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

Hernandez is expected to be sent on a minor league rehabilitation assignment soon.

"Runelvys threw off the mound today," Kansas City manager Tony Pena said. "Everything went well. I would like to see him throw once again before he pitches somewhere else.

"The DL is a precaution. You have to give him enough time to get his arm back in shape."

Hernandez, the team's Opening Day starter, is 4-3 with a 2.79 ERA in nine starts.

Voyles, who be used in middle relief for the Royals, had two saves and a 2.48 ERA in 20 relief appearances for Omaha. He is 0-2 with a 5.84 ERA in 29 major league games, all with Kansas City.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays: Left-hander John Rocker, who had been pitching for Double-A Orlando, was designated for assignment.

Rocker made two appearances earlier this season for the Devil Rays, allowing one run, two hits and three walks in one inning.

Tampa Bay has 10 days to trade, release or assign him to the minors. Devil Rays general manager Chuck LaMar hopes to sign Rocker to a minor league deal if he clears waivers.

"He'll clear in my opinion," LaMar said. 'We've had discussions about re-signing him to a minor league contract. We'll see how that turns out."

Rocker appeared in eight games for Orlando, giving up nine runs, 10 hits and 10 walks over nine innings.

"So far he has not shown the stuff that we obviously hoped he would," Lamar said. "If things work out and we end up signing him to a minor league contract, we'll continue to take a look. So far it has not panned out."

New York Mets: Shortstop Rey Sanchez and right-hander David Cone were activated off the DL, and outfielder Timo Perez was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right calf.

Perez was batting .259 but had been unable to play the field because of the injury. Sanchez was placed on the disabled list on May 15, retroactive to May 10, with a sprained left thumb. He was batting .196 in 30 games.

Cone, attempting a comeback after a year away from baseball, was 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in four starts when he went on the disabled list April 22 with a strained left hip.

The Mets also sent left-handed pitcher Jaime Cerda to Norfolk of the International League. Cerda was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 13 games. It is his second minor league assignment this season.

Also, Mets left-handed reliever Mike Stanton had an MRI on his left knee which showed inflammation of the knee lining. He received a cortisone shot and is listed as day-to-day.

St. Louis Cardinals: The Cardinals acquired right-handed reliever Esteban Yan and an undisclosed amount of cash from the Texas Rangers on Tuesday in exchange for minor-league outfielder Rick Asadoorian.

Yan is 0-1 with a 6.94 ERA in 15 games. He struck out 25 batters and walked seven in 23 innings.

Yan began his career in Baltimore in 1996. He pitched in Tampa Bay from 1998 through 2002. In 288 career games, all but 23 in relief, he is 26-32 with a 5.35 ERA.

Yan signed a one-year deal with Texas in December after the Devil Rays didn't offer a contract. He was 7-8 with a 4.30 ERA and 19 saves last season.

Also Tuesday, pitcher Todd Van Poppel was designated for assignment and replaced on the roster by right-hander Rosman Garcia.

The Rangers also transferred the sites of the rehabilitation outings of pitcher Chan Ho Park and outfielder Doug Glanville. Both are going from Oklahoma to Double-A Frisco, which is much to closer to Arlington.

Detroit Tigers: The Tigers acquired outfielder Alex Sanchez from Milwaukee in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers -- left-hander Chad Petty and outfielder Gary "Noochie" Varner.

Sanchez hit .282 with 10 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 43 games for the Brewers this season. He made 36 starts, all in center field.

The native of Cuba hit .289 with 55 runs scored, 33 RBIs and 37 steals in 112 games as a rookie last season.

He recently was replaced in the Brewers' starting lineup by Scott Podsednik.

Petty was 3-4 with a 4.40 ERA at Single-A Lakeland.

Varner, acquired by the Tigers in a trade with Cincinnati that sent Brian Moehler to the Reds last season, hit .303 with 30 RBIs at Double-A Erie.

Baltimore Orioles: The Orioles signed 2002 first-round draft pick Adam Loewen to a five-year deal -- barely.

The pitcher signed at 11:55 p.m. Monday. If Loewen had not signed by midnight, he would have gone back into the June 3 draft, and the Orioles would have received a supplemental-round pick -- No. 37 overall -- as compensation.

Loewen is a 6-foot-6 left-hander who went 6-1 this season with a 2.47 ERA at Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Fla. He was the Orioles' fourth overall pick in last year's draft. When the team failed to sign him, negotiations were suspended until his season ended May 10.

The agreement is contingent on Loewen passing a physical later this week in Baltimore.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Last year, Loewen refused to sign for less than $3.9 million, and the team said it would not offer more than $2.5 million.

Philadelphia Phillies: Right-hander Terry Adams was activated from the restricted list, four days after the pitcher left the team for personal reasons.

Adams returned home to Philadelphia on Friday after traveling to Montreal with the team the day before. No reason was given for his absence.

To make room for Adams, right-hander Joe Roa was designated for assignment.

Adams is 0-2 with a 3.27 ERA in 24 games this season. Roa was 0-2 with a 6.05 ERA in six games, including three starts.

Fan charged with misdemeanor for running onto field in L.A.
Misdemeanor charges were filed Tuesday against a man who ran onto the field at Dodger Stadium during a game and tried to shake hands with Los Angeles outfielder Brian Jordan.

Oscar Villanueva of suburban Panorama City got onto the field with two outs in the ninth inning of the Dodgers' game against the Colorado Rockies last Wednesday night.

Villanueva ran toward Jordan with one hand extended, as if to shake hands, before rookie Jason Romano ran over from center field to tackle the 26-year-old fan.

"Running onto the field at Dodger Stadium is not a game," city attorney Rocky Delgadillo said. "We will take every legal action to ensure the safety of players, umpires, stadium and team personnel and fans in and around the stadium."

Villanueva's arraignment is scheduled for June 12 at Los Angeles Superior Court. He could receive a six-month jail sentence and a $1,000 fine.
