| Report: Jays want Wells back | |||||
TUCSON, Ariz. – The pitcher the Blue Jays want as compensation in the wake of the disputed David Wells-Mike Sirotka deal is none other than Wells himself, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.
Both teams had until Tuesday morning to fax or hand in their documentation of their side of the story. White Sox general manager Kenny Williams turned his documentation in to Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations for the commissioner's office, on Monday. Toronto GM Gord Ash also beat the Tuesday deadline.
An unnamed official told the Times that Ash's report asks for the White Sox to return Wells as compensation for Sirotka's injured shoulder.
Alderson is expected to make a recommendation to
commissioner Bud Selig.
The Blue Jays are seeking extra compensation in the six-man
January trade because Sirotka has a bad shoulder that may need
surgery.
Reports say the Blue Jays are unable to purchase insurance on
Sirotka's contract should he not be able to pitch this season. That
means the Blue Jays may be asking the White Sox for financial
compensation.
Wells has still not arrived at Chicago's spring training camp
and is excused as he attends to personal business. He's scheduled
to report Thursday, still ahead of the Feb. 27 mandatory date. The
rest of the pitchers and catchers have been in camp since last
Friday.
"He's taking care of a personal matter right now. He's not
working on his own timetable," Williams said without disclosing
what Wells' business was.
"It's not just a David Wells type of thing. If it were to
happen to any of those men in that clubhouse, they would be granted
the same understanding."
