| Wells' arrival in ChiSox camp delayed | |||||
TUCSON, Ariz. – David Wells, where are you?
The Chicago White Sox are still awaiting the arrival of Wells, their newly acquired left-hander, at their spring training camp.
Wells was excused for personal business when the rest of the
pitchers and catchers reported last Friday. He was scheduled to
arrive Tuesday, but agent Gregg Clifton told team officials Monday
that now his client is being delayed until Thursday.
"I'd like to meet him," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said
Monday before the latest delay was revealed.
Manuel isn't perturbed at all by Wells' tardiness. He's going to
give the 20-game winner, acquired in a controversial January trade
with Toronto, all the leeway he needs.
He's counting on Wells starting the April 2 opener at Cleveland.
"I might say go to Cleveland, get your room and we'll meet you
when we get there," Manuel said.
Wells is not crazy about spring training to begin with, has
pitched limited spring innings the last couple of years and has
been bothered by back problems.
Manuel said he'd let the veteran determine his own
regimen and that he'd be excused from shuttle races like the ones
pitchers ran Monday.
"I don't think he can run. I don't know," Manuel said.
And he's not bothered by Wells' size.
"It's evident David Wells' weight doesn't affect him if he's
20-8," the manager added.
Before Wells and the White Sox can get comfortable, the
commissioner's office must rule on the trade that brought him to
Chicago for Mike Sirotka.
Sirotka has shoulder problems and the Blues Jays are seeking
additional compensation. Both teams must have their documentation
in the dispute to the commissioner's office by Tuesday.
Is Manuel worried about the ruling?
"Not at all," he said. "I'm confident nothing will come of
