Spring training update

Carlos Febles
Carlos Febles, right, slides home safely during the Royals' game against the Marlins on Friday.
A quick roundup of news to know about:
  • Ready for his debut: Rookie Chris Reitsma, who is scheduled to start the Reds' third game of the season on Wednesday, gave up three hits in five innings and struck out five on Friday in Cincinnati's game against the Phillies, extending his scoreless streak to 10 innings. Reitsma, 23, has never pitched above the Double-A level in his career.
  • Bo gets the go: Texas manager Johnny Oates announced on Friday that Bo Porter will start in center field on Opening Day when the Rangers play the Blue Jays in Puerto Rico. Then, in Texas' home opener against the Angels on Tuesday Chad Curtis will be the starting center fielder. The shuffling was made necessary when regular starter Gabe Kapler went on the disabled list after tearing his right quadriceps muscle in a game on March 22.
  • Morris gets the boot: Warren Morris, the Pirates' starting second baseman for the past two seasons, was sent to the minors Friday as the team reached the 25-man roster limit. The Pirates also sent outfielder Chad Hermansen and infielder Abraham Nunez to Triple-A Nashville. Pat Meares, the Pirates' shortstop last season, has been switched over to second base in place of Morris.
  • Leiter in midseason form: Al Leiter, who will be the Mets' Opening Day starter, finished up a fantastic spring training on Thursday by pitching four shutout innings. In all, Leiter hurled 19 2/3 innings of scoreless ball this spring.
