Hero of the day
Troy Glaus kept the Angels' win streak on track Sunday, belting a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to drive in the winning run against the White Sox. The 5-4 victory completed a three-game sweep, and extended Anaheim's winning streak to five games.

Goat of the day
Reds closer Danny Graves was brought into the ballgame in the eighth with an 8-5 lead and men on second and third. He left the inning having given up five runs before recording an out and Cincy fell to St. Louis 10-8. The five-run rally capped an eight-run comeback for the Cardinals.

Injury report

  • Red Sox OF Manny Ramirez is expected to miss at least 4-to-6 weeks with a broken left index finger that could require surgery, Red Sox team physician Dr. Bill Morgan said Sunday. Ramirez broke the finger Saturday night when he smacked into Seattle catcher Dan Wilson's shin guard on a headfirst slide.

  • San Diego 1B Phil Nevin missed Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves because of a sprained ligament in his left elbow. Nevin had an MRI exam Sunday.

  • Rangers 1B Rafael Palmeiro left Sunday's game with a strained right calf muscle sustained while running the bases. He's day-to-day.

  • Marlins 2B Luis Castillo sat out with a sore right hip and hamstring. He may return to the lineup Monday.

  • Cubs OF Moises Alou, who strained his left hamstring Thursday, did not play Sunday. Alou, who has been on the disabled list 11 times in 11 seasons, has missed 14 of the team's 35 games because or various ailments.

  • Rangers 2B-OF Frank Catalanotto missed his second straigtht game due to tightness in his right groin. Catalanotto was injured in Friday's game against Detroit, and is listed as day-to-day.

  • Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said 1B David Segui (left wrist), who was out of the starting lineup for the second straight day, remains day-to-day. Segui has missed seven of the past nine games.

  • Dodgers CF Dave Roberts left the game Sunday in the eighth inning after he aggravated his right quadriceps, an injury that troubled him in spring training. He said he'll likely sit out Monday's game against the New York Mets.

    Streak of the day
    After dropping 15 in a row, the Devil Rays won their second straight game Sunday. The best immediate recovery by a team that had lost 15 or more consecutive games was the 1948 Washington Senators. They won five in a row following an 18-game losing streak. The 1906 Boston Beaneaters went 9-4 after a 19-game slide.

    Meaningless play of the day
    Braves starter Greg Maddux made a spectacular catch during batting practice, leaping to the top of the wall to snare a drive by fellow pitcher Kevin Millwood. Maddux proudly held up his glove after the catch. Chicks dig the leather.

    Orioles-Devil Rays
    Baltimore: RHP Scott Erickson, who left his last game because of a strained groin, threw in the bullpen and is scheduled to make his next regular start Tuesday at Cleveland. ... RHP Rodrigo Lopez, who developed a blister on his right middle finger in Friday's game, is supposed to make his next start Wednesday against the Indians. ... Manager Mike Hargrove said 1B David Segui (left wrist), who was out of the starting lineup for the second straight day, remains day-to-day. Segui has missed seven of the past nine games.

    There was no postgame celebration for manager Hal McRae after the Devil Rays snapped a 15-game losing streak Saturday. "I just hope last night was the start," McRae said Sunday. "Nothing to celebrate." ... McRae is not ready to replace his closer by committee with former closer Esteban Yan -- who recorded a win and save the past two days -- just yet. "He needs to win that job back," McRae said. "I need him to win it. We're a better ballclub if he closes." ... LF Greg Vaughn, who is hitting .110, walked six times in the past three games ... The Devil Rays open a 13-day, 12-game road trip Tuesday at the New York Yankees. "They're first division and we're second division," 2B Brent Abernathy said. "We don't have to be better than them. We just have to be better than them for one day -- Tuesday."

    Yankees-Twins
    New York: The Yankees had 18 hits Sunday against the Twins. Shane Spencer was the only starter without one. ... The last time the Yankees won seven straight on the road was June 1999. ... Jorge Posada had four hits for the seventh time in his career. The last came July 17, 2001, against Philadelphia. ... CF Bernie Williams hit his first triple Saturday since July 26, 2000. ... LF Rondell White, batting .222, was benched for the second straight game. ... Johnson played back-to-back games at first base for the first time since the season's first week. ... Starter Mike Mussina improved to 18-2 lifetime against the Twins on Sunday. ... Manager Joe Torre won his 1,500th game Sunday. Bench coach Don Zimmer talked about his boss' victory total before the game. "Number one, it's great players," Zimmer said. "That's not a knock toward him -- he would tell you that. "He's a very patient guy and he knows how to deal with baseball players."

    Minnesota: DH David Ortiz was activated from the disabled list after Sunday's game. To make room, the Twins optioned C Matthew LeCroy to Triple-A. ... The mothers of 1B Doug Mientkiewicz and CF Torii Hunter, Janice Mientkiewicz and Shirley Hunter, threw out the ceremonial first pitches before Sunday's game. Mientkiewicz and Hunter received their 2001 Gold Glove awards on Saturday night. ... Mientkiewicz has a strained ligament in his left wrist, but it can be treated without rest. ... The Twins were trailing last year's attendance pace entering the weekend, but a three-game series against the Yankees boosted them ahead of last season. They drew 105,357 over the weekend for a season total of 454,917 -- 5,520 more than last season after 22 home games. ... This weekend was the biggest crowd for a three-game series since May 23-25, 1997, against Oakland. ... The Twins' home attendance average -- 20,678 per game -- ranks 21st out of the 30 major league teams. ... 2B Luis Rivas departed Sunday for Fort Myers, Fla., for extended spring training to continue rehabilitating a broken bone near his left wrist. Once he's ready, he'll begin a minor league rehab assignment before returning to the Twins' lineup. He's been out since April 3.

    Indians-Royals
    Cleveland: The Indians will likely make a roster move before the game Tuesday. Rookie LHP Alex Herrera was called up over the weekend while LH reliever Ricardo Rincon returned to Mexico for a family commitment. Rincon is scheduled to rejoin the club Tuesday in Cleveland after an Indians' off-day Monday. With Rincon back, Herrera will likely return to the minors. The Indians are likely to call up OF Bruce Aven, who is hitting .279 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 29 games with Triple-A Buffalo. Aven played with Cleveland briefly in 1997, hitting .211 in 13 games. Aven, a 30-year-old right-handed hitter, has played in the majors since then with Florida, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.

    Kansas City: Rookie reliever Brad Voyles was sent back to Triple-A Omaha to make room for OF Mark Quinn. Voyles had not pitched since May 4. ... The Royals will probably make another roster move Monday with left-handed reliever Brian Shouse eligible to come off the disabled list. Shouse went on the disabled list April 28 with inflammation in his elbow. ... Darrell May, who is on the disabled list with a left groin strain, is scheduled to make an injury rehabilitation start Monday with Omaha.

    Tigers-Rangers
    Detroit: C Matt Walbeck was recalled Sunday from Triple-A Toledo, but didn't play. If he had, Walbeck would have been the 36th different player to see action for the Tigers this season. Detroit and Texas were tied for the league high by using 35 players each so far this season. ... 1B Randall Simon went 7-for-39 during the Tigers' 10-game road trip, dropping his overall average from .356 to .287.

    Texas: 2B-LF Frank Catalanotto missed his second straight game Sunday because to tightness in his right groin. Catalanotto got hurt in Friday's game against Detroit, and is listed as day-to-day. ... After winning just two of their first 10 home games, the Rangers are 9-3 their last 12 and are now 11-11 at The Ballpark in Arlington this season. Overall, they are 15-8 since a 3-11 start. ... Herbert Perry, who was 3-for-4 Sunday has hit safely in five straight games when he had an at-bat. ... Alex Rodriguez is 8-for-16 the last four games with five extra-base hits.

    Blue Jays-Athletics
    Toronto: The 11-4 rout of the Oakland A's on Mother's Day was Toronto's first win on a Sunday this season. ... RHP Roy Halladay walked two batters on Sunday. He has walked two or less in 20 of his last 21 appearances.

    Oakland: The A's have dropped four straight series for the first time since their first four series last season. ... Rookie Carlos Pena, Jason Giambi's replacement at fist base, had another day off Sunday. Pena is in 2-for-26 slump. Olmedo Saenz got the start at first base Sunday. A's manager Art Howe said he'll probably tinker with his starting lineup "from here 'till the end of time." ... RHP Cory Lidle, now 1-5, is tied with Detroit's Jeff Weaver for most losses in the AL.

    White Sox-Angels
    Chicago: RF Magglio Ordonez, who did not start Sunday's game because of a sore lower back, hit his first career pinch-homer in the eighth inning off Anaheim's Al Levine. ... Tony Graffanino also hit a game-tying homer off Lou Pote, tying the score at 3. It was only his 20th homer in 1,008 career at-bats to that point -- and his first since last June 23 at Baltimore, when he hit a two-run shot off John Parrish as a pinch-hitter in an 8-2 victory. ... The White Sox play 22 of their next 28 games at Comiskey Park, after playing 23 of their first 38 on the road. "We play really well at home, so we need to capitalize on our home schedule and get the home crowd behind us a little bit," Frank Thomas said. "Our backs have definitely been against the wall on the road. We haven't played that well -- especially out west. Oakland swept us last week in Oakland, and that's what we've got to do to them in Chicago."

    Anaheim: RHP Donne Wall, on the DL since April 29 because of tightness in his arm, will have at least one more bullpen session before going on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake next Thursday or Friday. ... The mothers of Tim Salmon, Garret Anderson, Adam Kennedy and Matt Wise threw out ceremonial first pitches to their sons. Billie Salmon saw her son hit a home run . ... All of the Angels players autographed a pink chair that was on display in the bullpen during the game and will be auctioned off to benefit the "Big Bam! Foundation" for breast cancer awareness. There was an autographed pink chair in every major league team's bullpen on Sunday. ... Bengie Molina takes his AL-leading .431 road batting average on a six-game trip through Detroit and Chicago beginning Tuesday. Last season he hit .209 away from Anaheim.

    Red Sox-Mariners
    Boston: When the Red Sox lost to the Mariners 3-1 Saturday night, it was the first time since April 23-24 that they had lost consecutive games. ... LHP Darren Oliver lasted 1 2-3 innings Saturday night, giving up two runs on two hits, while walking five. It was his shortest outing since facing one batter without recording an out when he was with Texas May 7, 2001, against the White Sox.

    Seattle: Since May 1, Mariners starters have gone 5-1 with a 3.93 ERA in 10 starts. ... The Mariners stole two more bases Saturday night to give them 17 in their last four games. ... Desi Relaford walked all four times he batted Saturday night, one shy of the team record last done by Rickey Henderson July 30, 2000, against Toronto.

    NATIONAL LEAGUE
    Padres-Braves
    San Diego: OF Bubba Trammell, who finished 2-for-4 with a home run Sunday, improved to 4-for-5 in his career against Atlanta's Tom Glavine. Two of the hits were homers. ... The Padres scored a run in the first without a hit. Trenidad Hubbard reached on Rafael Furcal's error, and Mark Kotsay was safe on a hit-and-run grounder to Furcal, who threw to second too late to get Hubbard. Hubbard stole third and scored on a groundout by Ryan Klesko. ... Of San Diego's past 16 regular-season losses in Atlanta, the Padres led in 13 of them. ... OF Ray Lankford, who walked in the ninth as a pinch-hitter, was thrown out of the game by plate umpire Steve Rippley while jogging off after the inning.

    Atlanta: LF Chipper Jones asked manager Bobby Cox for a day off, his first of the season. "I'm tired," Jones said before the game. "I know my body better than anyone. I know my swing was slow last night." He had a seven-game hitting streak stopped Saturday night. "My bat's dragging," Jones said. 3B Vinny Castilla also sat out. ... SS Rafael Furcal committed his 13th error of the season, and the Braves 35 in 38 games. ...     Florida: Florida hitters struck out 11 times Sunday, increasing their season total to 304, most in the majors. ... The eight-run margin of victory matched Florida's biggest this season. ... Eighth-inning replacement Tim Raines, 42, made a running catch in left field and added an RBI double off the Dodgers' Jesse Orosco, 45.

    Rockies-Mets
    Colorado: In 1999, Brian Bohanon won his sixth game for the Rockies in the team's 31st game, the only Colorado pitcher to win six times in less than 40 games. ... John Thomson's bid to join that group failed despite a quality start of one earned run on six hits in seven innings. ... Todd Helton singled in the sixth to giver him at least one hit in each of the nine games on the Rockies road trip.

    New York: SS Rey Ordonez's throwing error in the seventh was his ninth error of the season in 28 games. ... The extra-inning game was the Mets' fourth of the season, third at home. ... After 40 years in the in the National League, the Mets have created an Alumni Association and expect to have a newsletter in the mail shortly to all of their living former players.

    Cardinals-Reds
    St. Louis: By overcoming an eight-run deficit, the Cardinals pulled off their biggest comeback since May 9, 1992, when they trailed Atlanta by nine runs and rallied for a 12-11 win. ... LHP Mike Matthews got hit on the left thumb by Aaron Boone's comeback grounder in the fifth and left the game. X-rays were normal, but he has a bruise. "If he's available for the next day or two, we'll catch a real break," manager Tony La Russa said. ... J.D. Drew's two-run homer in the eighth was his first career hit off Danny Graves. He was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts going into the at-bat. ... The Cardinals won on a Sunday for the first time in seven tries. ... Travis Smith gave up eight runs in one-plus inning, raising his ERA from 5.47 to 8.06. ... Eli Marrero's RBI single in the sixth was only his second hit in 35 at-bats. ... Garrett Stephenson and Woody Williams are expected to be activated off the disabled list and start during an upcoming three-game series against the Cubs.

    Cincinnati The Reds had their biggest blown lead since Sept. 4, 1989, when San Francisco overcame an 8-0 deficit at Cinergy Field and won 9-8. ... Manager Bob Boone defended his decision to take SS Barry Larkin out of the game after the second inning as a precaution against injury. Larkin singled and doubled as the Reds pulled ahead 8-0. Backup Gookie Dawkins was 0-for-3. "Larkin is fine," Boone said. "I could have given him a day off, but I'd probably do it again. We'll treat him with kid gloves. Pulling Larkin wasn't a factor. Pitching was a factor." ... Boone would have preferred that Graves pitch around J.D. Drew, who hit a two-run homer in the eighth on a 1-0 pitch. "If that next pitch was a ball, I would have walked him," Boone said. "In retrospect, I wish I would have." Graves pointed out that he's been successful against Drew, who was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts against him going into that at-bat. "I've gotten him out several times," Graves said. ... 1B Sean Casey was out of the lineup for the third consecutive game with a tender hamstring, injured while running to first base last Wednesday. He pinch-hit twice during the series. ... RHP Jose Rijo will start against Milwaukee on Monday, his 37th birthday.

    Astros-Pirates
    Houston: Jeff Bagwell's solo homer in the third inning Sunday was his fifth in nine games. He has four multihit games during that span, with four doubles and nine RBI. ... Now that he's thrown a pair of simulated games, Opening Day starter Wade Miller (pinched nerve in neck) is expected to begin a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A New Orleans. ... Miller's replacement in the rotation, RHP Tim Redding, makes his second consecutive start Monday against the Phillies. He gave up three runs in six innings in a 5-3 Astros loss at Philadelphia on Wednesday, but did not figure in the decision.

    Pittsburgh: Rainy days and Sundays get the Pirates down, with rain occurring during six of their scheduled seven Sunday games. They were rained out April 7 in Chicago, then had more than three hours of delays in a rain-shortened game against the Cubs in PNC Park the following week. Their April 21 game against Philadelphia was delayed nearly 1½ hours, and it rained for much of an April 28 doubleheader against the Padres. The only Sunday it hasn't rained on the Pirates was May 5, when they lost in San Diego. Sunday's game against Houston also was delayed for nearly an hour and a half. ... Pirates catching prospect J.R. House remains sidelined by an abdominal muscle injury despite having three painkilling injections. House, who is playing at Double-A Altoona, will be re-examined later this week. He might need surgery if the problem persists, but general manager Dave Littlefield prefers to avoid an operation if possible. ... Pirates attendance is down more than 8,000 per game from their inaugural season in PNC Park.

    Giants-Expos
    San Francisco: LF Barry Bonds hit his 12th homer of the season and 579th of his career in Sunday's 4-2 loss. Bonds moved to within four homers of tying Mark McGwire's 583 career homers for fifth on baseball's all-time list. Expos manager Frank Robinson -- who got his 700th career win as a major league manager -- ranks fourth with 586 homers. ... The homer was the 57th of Bonds' career against the Expos, tying Mike Schmidt's record for the most homers against Montreal. ... Bonds' 30 homers at Olympic Stadium are the most by a visiting player. Schmidt hit six of his record 32 homers against the Expos in Montreal at Jarry Park. ... 1B Damon Minor made his first start of the season and tied the game at two when he led off the seventh with his first homer since he connected off Arizona's Geraldo Guzman on Sept. 30, 2000.

    Montreal: Manager Frank Robinson, who saw Bonds draw to within seven homers of his career total, joked about the significance of reaching 700 wins. "It means I've been around a long time," Robinson said. "It's special. It's nice to be around and get 700 wins, but the main thing is it was a big win for the ballclub." Robinson has a 700-766 record as a manager with Cleveland, San Francisco, Baltimore and the Expos. ... RF Vladimir Guerrero hit his team-leading 11th homer in the sixth.

    Diamondbacks-Phillies
    Arizona: OF Danny Bautista went 2-for-13 in the series, lowering his batting average from .338 to .322. ... 1B Erubiel Durazo went 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and a walk on his second game with Double-A El Paso on Saturday. Durazo is rehabilitating from right hamate bone surgery on March 22. RHP Matt Mantei worked an inning, allowing a hit and striking out one, in his first action at El Paso. Mantei underwent "Tommy John" surgery last summer. ... Closer Byung-Hyun Kim has recorded at least one strikeout in each of his 17 appearances. He has 38 strikeouts in 22 innings for a 15.5 per 9-inning ratio.

    Philadelphia: OF Pat Burrell went 6-for-11 in the series. ... The Phillies paid tribute to Mother's Day by asking players to submit their mother's name. A random selection is made and the club flies in the winner. Agueda Abreu, mother of two girls and four boys, including OF Bobby Abreu, was Sunday's honoree and came in from Aragua, Venezuela. ... Lu Ann Cann, a local television journalist, became the first female public address announcer in Veterans Stadium history on Sunday. ... INF Tomas Perez is hitting .636 (7-for-11) with three doubles, a home run and six RBI in his last four games. ... The Phillies begin a six-game road trip in Houston on Monday. After a three-game set against the Astros, the team will play four in Arizona. The Phillies are 3-12 on the road and are seeking their first series win.

    Brewers-Cubs
    Milwaukee Saturday's rainout pushes Ben Sheets' next start from Tuesday to Thursday, against the Cubs in Milwaukee. Sheets has stiffness from back spasms, which he suffered running out a grounder in his last start Thursday. ... RHP Ruben Quevedo, passed over for Sunday's start by Glendon Rusch, will go Tuesday at Cincinnati. ... 2B Eric Young, who is mired in a 2-for-16 slump, did not get a chance to break out of it Sunday against his former club. Ronnie Belliard started instead. Young, who has always used an unorthodox triggering mechanism to start his swing, is "jumping at the ball," manager Jerry Royster said. "It worked for him in the past. It's a matter of slowing down what he does. It's not as easy to fix now, as a veteran player. I want to give him some time off. Besides, you don't want to be practicing against guys like (Jon) Lieber."

    Chicago: Top prospect Mark Prior allowed four unearned runs and four hits over 4 2-3 innings in his start at Triple-A Iowa. ... OF Moises Alou, who strained his left hamstring Thursday, did not play Sunday. Alou, who has been on the disabled list 11 times in 11 seasons, has missed 14 of the team's 35 games because or various ailments. ... The Cubs lineup had three switch-hitting infielders: 3B Bill Mueller, 2B Bobby Hill and SS Augie Ojeda. Ojeda filled in for Alex Gonzalez, whose left hamstring is still sore. ... Manager Don Baylor said C Todd Hundley, who is on the disabled list with a sore left thumb, will rest 10-14 more days until starting a rehab assignment.
