AMERICAN LEAGUE Toronto: LF Shannon Stewart missed his fourth straight game with sore hamstrings. ... The Blue Jays made room on their major league roster for right-hander Pete Walker by optioning RHP Scott Cassidy to Triple-A Syracuse. The Blue Jays claimed Walker on waivers from the Mets on Friday. Walker, 33, appeared in one game for the Mets this season, allowing one run in an inning against Montreal on April 20. He had been designated for assignment on April 29. The Blue Jays have three left-handers in their bullpen, and they wanted a more experience right-hander than Cassidy, who allowed 10 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings this season. ... Rookie 3B Eric Hinske has hit in 19 of his 24 starts. ... The Blue Jays ended their five-game losing streak to Anaheim.
Rangers-Indians Cleveland: It's about time the Indians started giving RHP Bartolo Colon some help. The club has scored just six runs in his last four starts, and Colon has gone 1/3 despite pitching into the sixth inning in each outing. ... The swelling around OF Milton Bradley's left eye has improved and the Indians said his double vision has minimized. Bradley broke an orbital bone near his eye when he got hit by a ball while trying to make a catch earlier this week. He will be re-examined Wednesday, and may still need surgery. ... Manager Charlie Manuel said DH Ellis Burks will likely miss two more games with a strained hamstring. Burks told Manuel his hamstring hurt while he was pinch hitting Friday. ... Bob Wickman's save Saturday was his career-high 19th straight.
Mariners-Yankees New York: RHP Mariano Rivera gave up three runs on three hits and an intentional walk in the ninth inning, leaving him with a 3.00 ERA. It was his first appearance since last Sunday at Seattle, and Rivera said the lack of work left him at less than 100 percent. "I haven't pitched enough," he said. Even so, he said his confidence was intact and wasn't worried that opposing hitters had figured him out. "You don't see the ball flying all over the place," he said. Rivera still needs one more save to tie the franchise record of 224 held by Dave Righetti. ... Two fans in the crowd of 52,081 caught home runs hit by the Mariners and threw them back -- directly to Yankees outfielders.
Royals-Orioles Baltimore: The Orioles reached .500 (15-15) Saturday for the first time since April 3 (1-1). ... DH-1B David Segui missed a second straight game Saturday with a sore left wrist, and manager Mike Hargrove said there's a chance that he could end up on the disabled list. Segui first hurt his wrist on a play at the plate in Kansas City on April 26. ... The Orioles have won four of their last five series. ... 3B Tony Batista has hit five of his nine homers against Kansas City. His four runs scored Saturday were a career high. ... C Brook Fordyce got two hits Saturday, one more than he had in his first 31 at-bats this year. He went 2-for-3 with a walk to lift his batting average to .088. ... DH-OF Marty Cordova has gone 5-for-8 with two home runs and five RBI in the last two games. ... RHP Rodrigo Lopez pitched seven innings Saturday, matching his longest career outing. ... OF Melvin Mora was hit by a pitch for the eighth time this season Saturday. He came in tied for the AL lead.
Red Sox-Devil Rays Tampa Bay: Manager Hal McRae is keeping a simple approach for the struggling Devil Rays, who entered play Saturday mired in an eight-game losing streak. "Try and stay aggressive," McRae said. "Don't become tentative. The whole attitude of the club has to be aggressive. Even I have to be aggressive. That's the only way we'll survive." ... McRae said RHP Victor Zambrano is the frontrunner to get more opportunities than anybody from the Devil Rays' closer by committee. McRae dropped Esteban Yan from the role after blowing a save Thursday. "There's a chance he can redeem himself," McRae said of Yan. "I'm open to anybody who can get it done." ... The New York Yankees, who open a three-game series at Tampa Bay on Tuesday, had two advance scouts and VP of major league scouting Gene Michael at the game.
Tigers-Twins Minnesota: SS Cristian Guzman returned to the lineup Saturday after sitting out five games with inflammation behind his left kneecap. Guzman, an All-Star last season, has struggled to a .211 batting average while playing through the soreness. He's been caught on four of seven stolen base attempts and has only two extra base hits. Guzman hit several balls out of the park during batting practice and manager Ron Gardenhire had him chasing down fungoes all over the field. ... RHP Joe Mays, recovering from an inflamed right elbow, threw lightly Saturday and will do the same Monday. Mays, also an All-Star in 2001, made three starts before going on the disabled list and is still out indefinitely. Pitching coach Rick Anderson played catch with Mays. "I'm trying to keep him positive," Anderson said. "It's tough to sit out for this long." ... 2B Luis Rivas played catch Saturday for the first time since a pitch from Kansas City's Dan Reichert on April 3 broke a bone in his wrist. Rivas hopes to take grounder in a couple days. ... The Twins' 13-1 start at home is their best-ever after 14 games. They entered Saturday's game with a nine-game winning streak at the Metrodome. Boston owns the AL record with 24 straight wins at home, set in 1988.
Athletics-White Sox Chicago: RHP Gary Glover, who has a 1.32 ERA in 13 relief appearances, got the starting spot that opened when Jon Rauch was demoted to Triple-A Charlotte. "It was a shock to me, but a pleasant shock," said Glover, who was 2-4 with a 5.21 ERA in 11 starts last season. Glover, who will make his first start Tuesday, said he doesn't know what kind of a pitch count he'll get. "I'm just going to keep going as far as I can until they come get me," he said. ... After a rough spring training, the White Sox bullpen has settled down, going 4-3 with a 4.32 ERA. "It was a struggle there in spring training and Seattle, but for the most part, they have made some huge steps in the right direction," manager Jerry Manuel said. ... The White Sox were 11/3 at Comiskey Park going into Saturday's game, the second-best home record in baseball and their best home start since 1990. "I know I'm very comfortable when we're here, and evidently (the players) are as well," Manuel said. ... Only six of Chicago's first 29 games were decided by two runs or fewer.
NATIONAL LEAGUE Philadelphia: SS Jimmy Rollins has been caught stealing four times (6-for-10) already this season. Last year when he stole 49 bases, Rollins was caught eight times. ... C Todd Pratt, who had been out since April 25 because of bruised ribs, made his sixth start of the season Saturday. ... The Phillies are hoping to duplicate last May's performance when they went 20-8, their best month of the season.
Mets-Astros Houston: RHP Wade Miller threw in the bullpen without pain Saturday. Miller is on the disabled list with a pinched nerve in his neck. ... Jeff Bagwell's 435-foot home run Friday night is the longest ever by a Houston player at Astros Field.
Marlins-Brewers Milwaukee: Milwaukee is 2-6 against left-handed starters after handing Nate Teut a defeat in his major league debut. ... INF Mark Loretta snapped an 0-for-18 slide with a first-inning single in his rare start Saturday. ... Closer Mike DeJean earned his sixth save, matching the number he had in his entire career entering this season. ... In each of the Brewers' major league-low nine victories, the Brew Crew has tallied at least eight hits and struck out seven or fewer times.
Braves-Cardinals St. Louis: LHP Bud Smith reported a pain-free 30-35 pitch bullpen session and is on schedule to come off the 15-day DL and start Tuesday at Chicago. "I'm happy with the way everything is going," said Smith, sidelined with a shoulder injury. "I just want to get back in there soon." ... RHP Darryl Kile, who starts the series finale on Sunday, is 7-11 with a 3.90 ERA in 27 career games against the Braves. ... NL Rookie of the Year Albert Pujols, who leads the league with 26 runs, did not start for the first time. Tino Martinez, who has batted sixth and seventh most of the season, replaced him in the cleanup slot and was 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly. "He just needed a little freshening," manager Tony La Russa said of Pujols. ... CF Jim Edmonds was back in the lineup Saturday after missing a start Friday with a minor groin injury and was fine after the game.
Cubs-Dodgers Los Angeles: LF Brian Jordan, praised for his positive clubhouse presence following the trade from Atlanta for Gary Sheffield, passed his first major test Saturday. He took the blame for not running out a popup that was turned into a double play after the ball was dropped by Cubs 3B Mark Bellhorn. Jordan mistakenly thought the infield fly rule was in effect with only Shawn Green on base, but didn't explain it to his teammates at the time because he was angry and frustrated about his mistake. "I came in today and did my apologies to (manager) Jim Tracy and everybody else. And when I see (Dodgers broadcaster) Vin Scully, I'm going to apologize to him, too." Jordan said. "It was one of those days. I had to call Mama this morning and she said, `Son, there's going to be better days.' If I was in Atlanta, I could go home and kiss the kids and forget about it. But when you don't have any family around, it eats at you. It just lingers and lingers and you can't sleep."
Expos-Diamondbacks Arizona: RHP Todd Stottlemyre was placed on the 15-day DL to allow him time to build up strength in his right shoulder. ... The roster was balanced by recalling LHP Greg Swindell from Triple-A Tucson and activating him from the DL. Swindell, who had been on the DL since March 23 with shoulder tendinitis, completed his rehab assignment Friday by retiring the side on eight pitches in the first inning of a start against Colorado Springs. ... The moves give the Diamondbacks three left-handers in the bullpen, which manager Bob Brenly called a luxury. "Zeke (Swindell) will probably be the first guy into a game if one of our starters gets jammed up," Brenly said. ... LF Luis Gonzalez, who snapped an 0-for-19 slump with a double Friday, was back in the starting lineup for this game. Brenly kept Gonzalez's consecutive games streak going at 356 by using him as a substitute in the eighth inning after his second non-start since 1999.
Pirates-Padres San Diego: The Padres activated RHP Kevin Jarvis from the 15-day DL in time to start Saturday night's game against Pittsburgh. Jarvis (1/3, 3.00 ERA) had been sidelined with a strained flexor tendon in his right elbow. He last pitched on April 18 against San Francisco, leaving after five innings. To make room on the roster, RHP Matt DeWitt was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Friday, with a strained right shoulder. ... Manager Bruce Bochy said RHP Brian Tollberg has been moved back from the bullpen to the rotation and will start Thursday at Florida. Tollberg swaps places with rookie Ben Howard, who allowed six runs and four hits in one-plus innings of Friday night's 6-4 loss to Pittsburgh. It was Howard's second big league start.
Reds-Giants San Francisco: OF Tsuyoshi Shinjo was a late scratch because of a right quad pull. He's day to day. "Hopefully it won't be more than two or three days," Shinjo said. "I want to play tomorrow." Shinjo said he felt some tightness after Friday night's game in which he had two infield hits. Shinjo said he wants to be ready to play when the Giants visit the New York Mets, his former team, on Tuesday. "I still believe I have some fans there," he said. ... The Giants will host a 40th reunion for their 1962 team which beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game playoff to win the NL pennant. The Giants lost the World Series to the New York Yankees in seven games. Among those expected to attend the festivities on June 1 are Hall of Famers Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. The team will be honored on the field before the game against Colorado. ... Pac Bell Park will be the site of two football games, a Rolling Stones concert and a motocross event during the off-season. Just in case, the Giants have enough of a reserve on a sod farm locally to replace the entire field. |
