It was his first appearance since last Sunday at Seattle, and Rivera said the lack of work left him at less than 100 percent. "I haven't pitched enough," he said. McRae said RHP Victor Zambrano is the frontrunner to get more opportunities than anybody from the Devil Rays' closer by committee. RHP Joe Mays, recovering from an inflamed right elbow, threw lightly Saturday and will do the same Monday. Mays, also an All-Star in 2001, made three starts before going on the disabled list and is still out indefinitely. Pitching coach Rick Anderson played catch with Mays. "I'm trying to keep him positive," Anderson said. "It's tough to sit out for this long." ... 2B Luis Rivas played catch Saturday for the first time since a pitch from Kansas City's Dan Reichert on April 3 broke a bone in his wrist. Rivas hopes to take grounder in a couple days. ... The Twins' 13-1 start at home is their best-ever after 14 games. They entered Saturday's game with a nine-game winning streak at the Metrodome. I am interested in seeing velocity readings and I am interested in seeing how Mark feels," Oakland pitching coach Rick Peterson said. Mulder may be available for the Toronto series. ... The White Sox ended a 10-game losing streak to Oakland with Friday night's 6-1 victory, but White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle believes that the record doesn't fully indicate their struggles against Oakland. Oakland activated 2B Randy Velarde from the 15-day DL and optioned OF Mike Colangelo to Triple-A Sacramento.

The White Sox were 11/3 at Comiskey Park going into Saturday's game, the second-best home record in baseball and their best home start since 1990. Braves-Cardinals
Atlanta: LHP Damian Moss, who didn't allow a hit for seven innings before being lifted Friday because of his 116-pitch count, hasn't allowed a hit in his last nine innings over two starts. Moss has held opponents to a .150 batting average. ... "He just needed a little freshening," manager Tony La Russa said of Pujols. ... CF Jim Edmonds was back in the lineup Saturday after missing a start Friday with a minor groin injury and was fine after the game.

    Cubs-Dodgers
Chicago: Delino DeShields heard the boos again at Dodger Stadium on Friday before doubling and scoring the go-ahead run in Cubs' 8-3 victory. The fans have never forgiven him for being the player the Dodgers got from Montreal in exchange for Pedro Martinez, who won three Cy Young awards after leaving Los Angeles in November 1993. "I didn't have the numbers I would have liked to have here," DeShields said. "At the time, it was a good trade -- and they thought it was a good trade, too. I mean, you can always sit back and second-guess. But if they thought that Pedro was going to be a Cy Young winner, you think they would have traded him? No." ... OF Moises Alou, who owns 60 racehorses in the Dominican Republic, organized the team's Kentucky Derby pool. But the horse he picked out of the styrofoam cup Friday was Danthebluegrassman, who was scratched Saturday morning. RHP Jon Lieber had the winner, 20-1 shot War Emblem. "I thought I had no chance at all when I picked him," Lieber said after watching the race on the clubhouse TV. "The first thing I asked Moises was, 'What's my chances?' He said, "Might lead out front, but might fade in the end."'

Los Angeles: LF Brian Jordan, praised for his positive clubhouse presence following the trade from Atlanta for Gary Sheffield, passed his first major test Saturday. He took the blame for not running out a popup that was turned into a double play after the ball was dropped by Cubs 3B Mark Bellhorn. Jordan mistakenly thought the infield fly rule was in effect with only Shawn Green on base, but didn't explain it to his teammates at the time because he was angry and frustrated about his mistake. "I came in today and did my apologies to (manager) Jim Tracy and everybody else. And when I see (Dodgers broadcaster) Vin Scully, I'm going to apologize to him, too." Jordan said. "It was one of those days. I had to call Mama this morning and she said, `Son, there's going to be better days.' If I was in Atlanta, I could go home and kiss the kids and forget about it. But when you don't have any family around, it eats at you. It just lingers and lingers and you can't sleep."

    Expos-Diamondbacks
Montreal: The Expos' 17 strikeouts in a 6-3 loss Friday night tied a franchise record for a nine-inning game, set Aug. 29, 1998, against San Diego. Arizona: RHP Todd Stottlemyre was placed on the 15-day DL to allow him time to build up strength in his right shoulder. ... The roster was balanced by recalling LHP Greg Swindell from Triple-A Tucson and activating him from the DL. Swindell, who had been on the DL since March 23 with shoulder tendinitis, completed his rehab assignment Friday by retiring the side on eight pitches in the first inning of a start against Colorado Springs. ... The moves give the Diamondbacks three left-handers in the bullpen, which manager Bob Brenly called a luxury. "Zeke (Swindell) will probably be the first guy into a game if one of our starters gets jammed up," Brenly said. ... LF Luis Gonzalez, who snapped an 0-for-19 slump with a double Friday, was back in the starting lineup for this game. Brenly kept Gonzalez's consecutive games streak going at 356 by using him as a substitute in the eighth inning after his second non-start since 1999.

    Pirates-Padres
Pittsburgh: Manager Lloyd McClendon was angry that the Padres video board operators showed a replay of Armando Rios stumbling over first base in the first inning of Friday night's 6-4 win. Rios fell down before getting up and limping into second. The Padres appealed, claiming Rios had missed first base, and second-base umpire Mark Barron agreed and ruled Rios out. McClendon came out to argue. "My major concern, I certainly don't want him (second base umpire Mark Baron) to be influenced by the replay on the scoreboard. He said he wasn't," McClendon said. "I was looking up like everybody else in the stands. To be honest with you, I was in total shock that they would show a replay like that. To my understanding, you're not supposed to do that." ... 2B Pokey Reese is eligible to come off the 15-day DL Sunday, and McClendon said he'll probably be activated. Reese has been sidelined with a strained right hamstring.

San Diego: The Padres activated RHP Kevin Jarvis from the 15-day DL in time to start Saturday night's game against Pittsburgh. Jarvis (1/3, 3.00 ERA) had been sidelined with a strained flexor tendon in his right elbow. He last pitched on April 18 against San Francisco, leaving after five innings. To make room on the roster, RHP Matt DeWitt was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Friday, with a strained right shoulder. ... Manager Bruce Bochy said RHP Brian Tollberg has been moved back from the bullpen to the rotation and will start Thursday at Florida. Tollberg swaps places with rookie Ben Howard, who allowed six runs and four hits in one-plus innings of Friday night's 6-4 loss to Pittsburgh. It was Howard's second big league start.

    Reds-Giants
Cincinnati: OF Juan Encarnacion has given the Reds plenty of punch this season. That and a lower salary have made him popular in Cincinnati. Encarnacion leads the team with seven home runs and 19 RBIs. "He's been spectacular," Reds manager Bob Boone said. "He's a consummate five-tool guy. He's a real special player. It's just a matter of maturing." Encarnacion's three stolen bases are second on the team to Reggie Taylor's five. ... The Reds pitching staff entered the game fourth in the NL with a 3.34 ERA, just behind San Francisco's 3.27. In . ... Jose Rijo's hit in the third inning against Kirk Rueter on Saturday snapped an 0-for-28 streak by Reds pitchers.

San Francisco: OF Tsuyoshi Shinjo was a late scratch because of a right quad pull. He's day to day. "Hopefully it won't be more than two or three days," Shinjo said. "I want to play tomorrow." Shinjo said he felt some tightness after Friday night's game in which he had two infield hits. Shinjo said he wants to be ready to play when the Giants visit the New York Mets, his former team, on Tuesday. "I still believe I have some fans there," he said. ... The Giants will host a 40th reunion for their 1962 team which beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game playoff to win the NL pennant. The Giants lost the World Series to the New York Yankees in seven games. Among those expected to attend the festivities on June 1 are Hall of Famers Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. The team will be honored on the field before the game against Colorado. ... Pac Bell Park will be the site of two football games, a Rolling Stones concert and a motocross event during the off-season. Just in case, the Giants have enough of a reserve on a sod farm locally to replace the entire field.
