"All I know is the bat slipped out of my hand. I didn't purposely let it go. I'm not out there trying to hurt anyone."
-- Red Sox outfielder Trot Nixon, who was suspended four games for throwing his bat in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

  • AMERICAN LEAGUE
    Yankees-Devil Rays
New York: Manager Joe Torre and GM Brian Cashman had lunch with owner George Steinbrenner in nearby Tampa. "We didn't get specific about anything -- general overview," Torre said. ... SS Derek Jeter and CF Bernie Williams switched spots in the lineup. Jeter was moved to second -- after hitting third the past 18 games -- with Williams following. "Bernie is starting to look like he's more comfortable," Torre said. "He's excited with the fact he's feeling stronger in the shoulders." Williams had cortisone shots in both shoulders last month. ... Cashman said LHP Andy Pettitte, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow strain, could throw off a mound Friday. ... Torre said LHP Sterling Hitchcock (groin/lower back) should be activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday or Friday and will pitch out of the bullpen. "You want to contribute whatever way you're asked to contribute," said Hitchcock, who rejoined the team Tuesday after making three minor league rehab starts. ... Nick Johnson started at 1B after missing Sunday's game with a sore right knee.

Tampa Bay: RF Ben Grieve (left thumb bruise) was out of the starting lineup for the third straight game. He might DH Wednesday. ... DH Greg Vaughn, who started the game hitting .110, may get his second outfield start Thursday. ... LHP Bobby Seay (left shoulder) was scheduled to start a rehab assignment with Double-A Orlando. ... Highly regarded OF prospect Josh Hamilton (pulled rib muscle) was placed on the DL for the second time this season at Class-A Bakersfield.

    White Sox-Rangers
Chicago: After 32 games last season, the White Sox were 12-20 and trailed the Minnesota Twins by 11 games in the AL Central. Chicago's 19-13 start this season was its best after 32 games since going 21-12 in 1993 en route to the AL West title. ... After winning seven of their first 12 road games, the White Sox lost four straight away from home, all to AL West teams by a combined 38-10 margin.

Texas: RF Juan Gonzalez hit off the tee Tuesday, the next step in his recovery from a right hand injury that has kept him out of action for all but seven games this season. Gonzalez was placed on the 15-day DL on April 11. He was cleared to begin swinging a bat Monday. ... RHP Chan Ho Park reported no problems with his right hamstring following Monday's 80-pitch simulated game. Park aggravated the hamstring in the regular-season opener and hasn't pitched since. Park is expected to throw again Wednesday and could be activated next week.

    Royals-Twins
Kansas City: Interim manager John Mizerock, the youngest manager in the majors at age 41, came to Minnesota looking for his first win. The Royals lost Mizerock's first six games after Tony Muser was fired. Mizerock is among several names being tossed around for the permanent job, but Royals spokesman Aaron Babcock said the process has just begun and didn't expect anything to happen soon. GM Allard Baird is not with the team on the two-game series against the Twins. ... C Brent Mayne was placed on the 15-day DL Tuesday with back spasms, retroactive to April 30. OF Brandon Berger was recalled from Triple-A Omaha to take his place. ... The Royals entered the series in Minneapolis with the worst mark in the majors at 8-21 and a road record of 4-11. The Twins are a major league-best 15-2 at home. ... The Twins series began a string of 13 straight games within the AL Central for the Royals.

Minnesota: DH David Ortiz took live batting practice before Tuesday's game for the first time since a bone chip in his knee forced him out of the lineup and required arthroscopic surgery. Ortiz, who missed his 14th game Tuesday, is expected back next Monday when the Twins begin a seven-game road trip in Kansas City. ... 2B Luis Rivas, out since the second game of the season with a broken bone in his wrist, threw groundballs to himself by tossing balls against the padded wall behind the plate. Rivas could be ready for a minor league rehab assignment next week. ... RHP Rick Reed had a one-word answer to a question about his health: "Good." Reed left after five innings in Monday's game against Detroit with a strained muscle in his forearm, related to throwing his slider, but isn't expected to miss his turn in the rotation. ... Actress Mary Tyler Moore, whose self-titled TV show helped make Minneapolis famous, threw out the first pitch at Tuesday night's game. Fittingly, Moore tossed a Twins cap in the air after the pitch. Moore is in town for a ceremony to be held Wednesday that will include the unveiling of a statue of her likeness in downtown Minneapolis.

    Indians-Orioles
Cleveland: OF-DH Ellis Burks, who hasn't started since April 28 because of a strained right hamstring, may be ready to play in the next couple of days, manager Charlie Manuel said. Burks' unavailability has made it difficult for Manuel to do much maneuvering in his outfield. Manuel said he considered using Brady Anderson as a designated hitter Tuesday night, but decided not to because Anderson is the only other outfielder who could play center field in case he needed to pinch-hit for CF Jolbert Cabrera. ... Opponents were 6-for-45 against RHP Paul Shuey entering Tuesday's game, and Manuel knows one of the reasons for the reliever's success. By limiting him to a single inning, Manuel believes he's getting a more dominant pitcher. ... Cabrera spent time before Tuesday's game trying to break in his glove in an unusual way. He placed the mitt on the Indians bench and repeatedly hammered it with his bat. "It works, but only on my outfield glove," he said. Cabrera breaks in his infield glove in the more conventional way of placing a ball in the webbing.

Baltimore: 1B/DH David Segui said he has a torn tendon in his left wrist, but the Orioles were waiting for the results of his exam Tuesday before making an announcement. Even if the injury is less severe, it's likely Segui is headed to the disabled list. ... OF Larry Bigbie, who went 6-for-6 with Triple-A Rochester on Monday and was batting .400, is a strong candidate to replace Segui on the roster. "If we do need to bring somebody up, he's one of the guys we'd give a serious look at," Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said. ... RHP Jason Johnson is almost ready to begin throwing for the first time since breaking the middle finger on his right hand April 25. "It feels great. There's no pain left," the right-hander said. ... C Geronimo Gil was in the starting lineup for the first time since April 29 after missing time with a sore groin and hamstring.

    Tigers-Angels
Detroit: RHP Steve Sparks' 3-1 loss to Minnesota on Monday night ended a personal string of 10 consecutive complete games that resulted in victories. He had not gone the distance in a loss since May 24, 1996, against the White Sox at Chicago. ... Tigers manager Luis Pujols, 25 games into his big league managerial career, still hasn't gotten all the bugs out yet. After getting into the team's Anaheim hotel at 1:30 a.m. PDT, Pujols was awoken by the alarm on his wrist watch at 5 a.m. He had it set to go off at 8 a.m. _ Detroit time... Dmitri Young is expected to come off the DL Wednesday and play 1B. Young has been sidelined since April 23 because of a hernia.

Anaheim: The Angels have two of the top five pitchers among the AL leaders in ERA. Ramon Ortiz has a 2.44 ERA and Kevin Appier's is at 2.88. ... Anaheim's batters entered Tuesday night's game totaling 141 strikeouts, the fewest in the majors. ... Benji Gil, sidelined since April 6, because of a sprained ankle, ran the bases Tuesday at Edison Field and is hoping to begin a rehab assignment within the next week. Gil, who hit a career-best .296 last season, was injured when Texas' Rusty Greer slid into him at first base.

    Red Sox-Athletics
Boston: RHP Frank Castillo was suspended for five games for hitting a batter last Sunday against Tampa Bay, while teammate Trot Nixon was suspended for four games for throwing his bat at a pitcher. Both also were fined Tuesday by Bob Watson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline. Devil Rays pitcher Ryan Rupe also was fined. ... Going into Tuesday night's game against the A's, The Red Sox had doubled in 22 consecutive games. ... Former A's OF Johnny Damon was making his first trip back to Oakland since signing with the Red Sox in the offseason. He singled in his first at-bat.

Oakland: LHP Barry Zito agreed to a four-year contract extension Tuesday, keeping him in Oakland through 2005 with a club option for 2006. Zito, 23, is 2-2 with a 4.54 ERA in his third major league season. ... The A's activated IF Mario Valdez from the disabled list and designated him for assignment. The A's have 10 days to outright, trade or release him. Valdez was on the disabled list with a right calf strain. Valdez batted .278 with one home run and eight RBI in 32 games with Oakland last season. ... Going into Tuesday night's game against the Red Sox, the A's were 27-6 at Oakland Coliseum, dating back to last season.

    Blue Jays-Mariners
Toronto: OF Shannon Stewart missed his sixth straight game with sore hamstrings. "He worked out here yesterday and jogged a little bit, but his hamstring is still not quite right," manager Buck Martinez said. ... Starting RHP Justin Miller is enjoying his first month in the big leagues. Miller (2-0, 5.40 ERA) is the only Blue Jays pitcher with more than one win and he makes his third start this weekend in Oakland against his former organization. Miller allowed one run in seven innings and the Blue Jays ended their nine-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Angels on Saturday. "Justin gave us one of the best starts we've had all year," Martinez said.

Seattle: The Mariners recalled right-handed reliever Julio Mateo from Triple-A Tacoma and sent down left-handed reliever Brian Fitzgerald. ... Injured DH Edgar Martinez ran the bases for the first time since having surgery April 13 to remove a ruptured hamstring tendon in his left leg. Manager Lou Piniella said Martinez would likely be activated for next Tuesday's game in Toronto. Martinez is scheduled to spend the weekend with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. ... With Martinez returning, Piniella said he would probably carry 11 pitchers instead of 12. And he will find a way to keep using Ruben Sierra, who leads the AL in batting average and has been Martinez's replacement. ... Ichiro Suzuki was scheduled to have four stitches removed from his left knee Tuesday night. Suzuki ran into the fence in foul territory while attempting to catch a flyball by the Yankees' Ron Coomer in the fourth inning April 26.

    NATIONAL LEAGUE
    Padres-Marlins
San Diego: CF Mark Kotsay, who did not play over the weekend against Pittsburgh because of an injured right hand, returned to the lineup Tuesday. Kotsay batted second in the order, his usual spot. ... Wednesday's starter, Brett Tomko, is making his third career start against the Marlins. Tomko has beaten Florida in both of his past appearances against the Marlins, with one of those wins coming at Pro Player Stadium, and has a 3.21 ERA against Florida. ... 2B D'Angelo Jimenez has led off in all 32 of the Padres' games this season. ... C Wiki Gonzalez (fractured left hand) will start a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Lake Elsinore later this week. Gonzalez has played in only three games this season; Tom Lampkin has handled the load in Gonzalez's absence, making his 20th start of the season Tuesday.

Florida: RHP Brad Penny, who was removed from his last start May 2 after two innings because of an arm strain, threw Sunday and met with team doctors on Monday. Manager Jeff Torborg said the doctors found no major trouble, and Penny will start Monday at Colorado. ... Wednesday's starter for the Marlins, Kevin Olsen, will face San Diego for the first time in his career. ... RHP Josh Beckett (blister) is eligible to come off the DL on May 14 and will likely be that night's starter against the Rockies. Beckett threw fastballs and changeups in an eight-minute session before Tuesday's game; he will throw curveballs Thursday. ... Torborg said the team may have a staff pitching outing on Saturday. Relievers Gary Knotts and Michael Tejara have each started once before in their careers, and are the likely candidates to get the call Saturday. Julian Tavarez, who has been on the disabled list, will throw batting practice Wednesday and he, too, could be Saturday's starter.

    Cardinals-Cubs
St. Louis: Eli Marrero, who caught Bud Smith's no-hitter last season, got his second start at catcher Tuesday night. "He caught Bud last year," manager Tony La Russa said. "Bud knows himself." ... La Russa didn't waste any time addressing Kerry Robinson and Jim Edmonds' fielding gaffe Monday night. Robinson and Edmonds let a catchable fly ball drop between them, and it cost the Cardinals two runs in their 6-5 loss. "(Edmonds) thought it was a routine ball for the left fielder and he was waiting for him to call it," La Russa said. "The left fielder sees him out of the corner of his eye and thinks he's the quarterback so he thinks he's going to take charge. That's why you practice communication in spring training. That should not happen." ... Miguel Cairo draws some tough pitchers when he starts. Cairo got his third start of the season Monday, facing Kerry Wood. One of his other starts was against Randy Johnson. "He hasn't gotten any easy pickings," La Russa said. "But it's still a game where he gets at-bats." ... St. Louis' bullpen has already logged 118 2-3 innings, most in the majors.

Chicago: RHP Matt Clement, hit in the right biceps by a pitch by Kevin Brown on Sunday night, did his regular side session Tuesday and said he plans to make his next start. "If Matt tells me he's OK, then we can just go ahead and take him at his word," Cubs manager Don Baylor said. ... Cubs prospect Mark Prior, who made his first start at Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday night and struck out 10 and hit two homers, might be in Chicago before long. "He's a polished pitcher already," Baylor said of Prior, the second overall pick in last June's draft. "He needs innings, he needs experience. You can tell his stuff is real good and he knows what to do with it." ... C Todd Hundley, who went on the DL Monday with a dislocated thumb, will have X-rays Wednesday to make sure it's not broken. In the meantime, Hundley was in the radio booth Tuesday night, doing color commentary to fill in for Ron Santo.

    Brewers-Reds
Milwaukee: LHP Glendon Rusch is having trouble getting started. In his start May 2 against Atlanta, Rafael Furcal homered on his first pitch. On Tuesday night, Barry Larkin singled on his first pitch, setting up Cincinnati's four-run rally. ... Brewers' opponents have scored in the first inning of seven of their last eight games. They've homered in six of them. ... RHP Jamey Wright, disabled by shoulder tendinitis, will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday. He'll be limited to 60 pitches. ... RHP Curtis Leskanic, recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, also will start a rehab assignment with Indianapolis. He's scheduled to throw 25 pitches on Friday at Pawtucket.

Cincinnati: Adam Dunn's three-run homer in the first Tuesday was his seventh in his last 10 games, giving him the team lead in RBI. Dunn opened the season in a 2-for-20 slump. ... SS Barry Larkin was back in the starting lineup after sitting out the opening game of the series with a tight hamstring. ... A few fans showed support for Ken Griffey Jr. on Tuesday, a day after he complained about how fans and the media have treated him. Griffey was particularly unhappy with a television poll that asked which player should be benched when he's recovered from a knee injury; 74 percent of fans said Junior should sit. One banner behind the right-field foul pole read, "Survey Says 100% of Smart Fans Still Love Junior." Another said, "Leave J.R. Alone." One negative sign was quickly removed. ... The Reds put RHP Joey Hamilton on the 15-day DL with a slight hamstring tear and called up RHP Jose Acevedo from Triple-A Louisville. Acevedo will pitch out of the bullpen.

    Astros-Phillies
Houston: RHP Wade Miller threw 37 pitches in two innings of a simulated game Tuesday. Miller has been on the disabled list since April 13 with a pinched nerve in his neck. ... 1B Jeff Bagwell didn't start Tuesday night. Orlando Merced took his spot in the lineup. Bagwell gets an occasional day off after having surgery on his shoulder last year. ... RHP Tim Redding, 1-2 with an 8.18 ERA, makes his fourth start Wednesday night. He's coming off a win over Montreal.

Philadelphia: An MRI exam on Robert Person's right elbow revealed no structural damage, but the right-hander is uncertain when he'll return. Person, on the disabled list with tendinitis in the elbow, said he still feels soreness and the best-case scenario would be to pitch next weekend in Arizona. Person, who won a career-high 15 games last season, is 0-3 with a 5.45 ERA. ... David Coggin will take Person's spot in the rotation, and pitch against Arizona's Randy Johnson on Saturday. Manager Larry Bowa said the team doesn't intend to call up prospect Brett Myers unless Person is out longer than expected. "Once he gets up here, I don't think he's going back," Bowa said.

    Giants-Mets
San Francisco: Barry Bonds came into Shea Stadium leading the majors with 40 walks -- putting him on a pace to draw 216 and shatter his record of 177 last season. He quickly added to his total by seeing four straight balls from Steve Trachsel in the first. The home-run king said he was surprised to receive so many walks so early in the season. "This is a bit unusual," Bonds said. "It has come with the territory of my game and I have grown to accept it." Even so, Bonds admitted, "This is probably the hardest thing I've gone through in my career. You don't have a swing, you don't get a chance to get into a groove." Mets manager Bobby Valentine was more impressed by another Bonds stat -- only five strikeouts. "If you don't throw it over, he's not swinging," Valentine said.

New York: SS Rey Ordonez returned to the starting lineup after missing a six-game road trip because of a sore left ribcage muscle. ... 2B Roberto Alomar spent Monday's off-day moving to a new apartment and getting treatment for tightness in his lower back and a sore right hip. Alomar said he's felt that way ever since playing on artificial turf with Toronto in the early 1990s. "I hope it's not a serious problem," he said. ... LHP Shawn Estes, traded from San Francisco to the Mets last December, will start against his former team Wednesday night. "There will be some anxiety, I'm sure," he said. "I look at it as a challenge. You're not only pitching against one of the best teams, you're pitching against one of the best players ever." Estes said he faced Barry Bonds once in a simulated game, "and I got a simulated out."

    Dodgers-Braves
Los Angeles: OF Brian Jordan had to make sure he went to the right clubhouse at Turner Field. He spent the last three years playing for the Braves. "It's mixed emotions," said Jordan, who was traded to the Dodgers during the offseason. "I got spoiled here." But he's happy in his new surroundings. "We've got a good team," Jordan said. "This is a good bunch of guys." And it wasn't that difficult to find the visitor's clubhouse. "Oh, I was here before," he said, remembering that he played with the Cardinals during the stadium's first two seasons. ... LHP Odalis Perez, who went to the Dodgers along with Jordan in the trade that sent Gary Sheffield to the Braves, will start Wednesday's game against Kevin Millwood. Perez is 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA, including a one-hitter against the Cubs on April 27 in which he faced the minimum 27 batters. ... Another former Atlanta pitcher, Andy Ashby, will start for the Dodgers on Thursday.

Atlanta: The Braves played their fourth straight game with a revamped batting order: Marcus Giles hitting second, followed by Gary Sheffield, Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones. At the beginning of the season, Andruw Jones was hitting second, Chipper Jones third, Sheffield cleanup and Giles eighth in the order. While the Braves won two of three in St. Louis last weekend, the new arrangement hardly led to a flurry of scoring; they scored just eight runs during the series. ... Why are the Braves having so much trouble scoring runs? Before Tuesday's game, they ranked 13th in the NL with a .239 average -- which was even lower (.221) with runners in scoring position. ... OF-1B B.J. Surhoff was back in the Braves dugout for the first time since his season-ending knee injury April 27.

    Rockies-Expos
Colorado: SS Juan Uribe brought a 17-game hitting streak -- the longest in the NL this season -- into Tuesday night's game. Uribe, who is hitting .368 (25-for-68) over the course of the streak, can tie the White Sox's Paul Konerko for the longest streak in the majors this season by extending the streak by another game. Konerko had an 18-game streak from April 13 to May 1. ... 1B Todd Helton entered hitting .439 (54-for-123) overall against Montreal, with 17 homers and 49 RBI. He has a .502 on-base percentage and a .902 slugging percentage against the Expos. ... The Rockies haven't won a road game since April 19, extending their losing streak away from home to eight games after being swept in three straight in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Montreal: CF Peter Bergeron was optioned to Triple-A Ottawa on Tuesday and OF Endy Chavez was recalled to replace him as the Expos' leadoff hitter. Bergeron, tied for sixth in the NL with 24 runs scored, hit .187 and struck out 44 times in 31 games, including 29 as Montreal's leadoff hitter. Chavez was named the International League's Batter of the Week on Monday after going 11-for-21 (.524) with five extra-base hits -- including one home run _ in six games last week. He hit .363 with two homers and 13 RBI in 26 games with Ottawa. ... 1B Lee Stevens entered the game in an 0-for-21 slump. He went 1-for-22 on Montreal's six-game road trip to Houston and Arizona, and didn't have a hit since he singled in the first inning of a 5-1 win over the Astros on April 30.

    Pirates-Diamondbacks
Pittsburgh: When Brian Giles homered off Randy Johnson in the first inning Monday night, it was his first hit off of a left-hander this season. It also was his second hit off Johnson in 18 career at-bats. ... Johnson's last two regular-season losses have come against the Pirates. ... The three runs Pittsburgh scored Monday were one more than the Pirates scored in their three games in Colorado to start their current nine-game road trip. ... In his last 15 games, Jason Kendall has gone 19-for-45 (.422) to raise his average from .119 to .276. He was 3-for-3 against Johnson to raise his career average against the Big Unit to .375.

Arizona: 1B Erubiel Durazo was so impressive in batting practice Tuesday that manager Bob Brenly is considering accelerating Durazo's return to the team. Durazo, sidelined with a broken hamate bone in his wrist, will go to extended spring training in Tucson this week, then report to Double-A El Paso. ... Diamondbacks relievers have thrown eight consecutive shutout innings and have allowed one earned run in their last 16 innings. The bullpen has an 0.94 ERA in the first seven games of this nine-game home stand. ... Arizona signed former Diamondbacks INF Hanley Frias to a minor league contract. Frias was released this week by Triple-A Rochester.
