GAME LOG
MIAMI (AP) -- Eric Owens refused to strike out and Trevor Hoffman refused to give in. Owens fouled off seven pitches in a 12-pitch at-bat before his pop fly landed just past the outstretched arm of first baseman Derrek Lee, breaking a scoreless tie in the 10th inning and sending the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory over Florida on Saturday night. Lee said he turned the wrong way on the ball, then momentarily lost it in the lights. "The only thing I knew was that I wasn't going to strike out," Owens said. "In that situation, you're just trying to put the ball in play." Desi Relaford singled off Antonio Alfonseca with one out in the 10th and moved to second on pinch-hitter John Mabry's hard-hit ground ball to second, which Luis Castillo initially bobbled before making the play. Mike Darr followed with a double, scoring Owens for a 2-0 lead. Alfonseca (4-5) thought he had Relaford struck out with a belt-high fastball before giving up the single. Alfonseca, who leads the majors with 34 saves, also nearly struck out Owens, but catcher Mike Redmond couldn't hold on to a foul tip with two strikes. "Whatever combinations that led us to a defeat were frustrating," Marlins manager John Boles said. "When you don't score, bad things usually happen to you." Kevin Walker (5-0) pitched one inning for the victory. Trevor Hoffman worked the 10th for his 32nd save, giving the Padres their 11th win in 14 games. Hoffman needed 35 pitches to close out Florida. "Tonight was all about trying to muster up as much energy as I could," said Hoffman, who picked up his second save in as many nights. "It was real tough to go out there. I'm not going to take away any negative feeling from this game. It was just a tough inning to get through." Florida ended its shutout streak at 19 innings with a run in the 10th. With the bases loaded and no outs, pinch-hitter Mark Smith hit a sacrifice fly. The threat ended when Castillo grounded back to Hoffman and Mark Kotsay struck out with runners on second and third. "Hoffman's one of the premier closers in the league. He's been in that situation many times," Lee said. "He doesn't panic; he keeps working." The Marlins had a good chance to take the lead in the eighth when pinch-hitter Andy Fox walked to lead off the inning, but pitcher Reid Cornelius, pinch-hitting for starter Chuck Smith, popped out trying to bunt. The Padres got another break when Castillo's ground ball deflected off starter Matt Clement's foot and right to shortstop Relaford, starting an inning-ending double play. Smith got his sixth no-decision of the season after giving up five hits in a career-high eight innings. He struck out seven and walked two. Clement was equally impressive. He pitched eight strong innings, giving up two hits and three walks. He struck out four in just his fourth no-decision in 25 starts. "What gets lost in a game like this is the effort by the starting pitchers," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "You saw some great pitching tonight. It was a nail-bitter at the very end, but Trevor showed what he was all about. I think he was running on fumes." It was the second consecutive solid starting pitching performance for the Padres. Adam Eaton tossed eight shutout innings Friday in a 3-0 win over Florida. "You have to give their pitching credit," Lee said. "Clement was unbelievable. He was throwing a 92, 93 mph sinker with a nasty slider. And Eaton was awesome. Their pitching has been very good." Game notesFlorida's Preston Wilson struck out twice, giving him 148 this season and leaving him 41 shy of Bobby Bonds' major league record set in 1970. ... Padres C Ben Davis missed the game with a strained muscle in his left side and was listed as day-to-day. ... Phil Nevin improved to 13-for-23 (.565) with five homers and 11 RBIs in seven games against the Marlins this season. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard San Diego Clubhouse Florida Clubhouse RECAPS Oakland 9 Detroit 5
