OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Jason Giambi set another milestone
Saturday as the Oakland Athletics ended a six-game losing streak.
Giambi hit his 30th home run and Ben Grieve added a three-run
homer, leading the A's over the Detroit Tigers 9-5.

Matt Stairs hit a sacrifice fly in the second and Giambi hit a
two-run homer in the third, giving him 101 RBI. Giambi joined Jose
Canseco (1986-88) as the only Oakland players to drive in 100 runs
in three straight years.
"It sounds like a broken record, but he's having a great
year," A's manager Art Howe said. "He's doing the job day in and
day out and giving us opportunities to win."
Giambi also reached 100 RBI quicker than any player in Oakland
history, bettering Reggie Jackson's 1973 pace, when he got his
100th RBI on Aug. 18.
"It's exciting, but it's a great thing how I'm surrounded by
great players around here who do an outstanding job ahead of me,"
Giambi said. "Guys have to be on to get RBI. We'll take anything
that gets us back on top."
Tim Hudson (13-4) took a one-hit shutout into the seventh, then
was chased and wound up allowing four runs and five hits in
six-plus innings. Hudson, coming off a 13-0 loss to the Chicago
White Sox, is 4-0 against Detroit in four career starts.
"Any time you have a bad outing, you can't wait for your next
start," he said. "I felt positive coming in I was going to stop
what's happening. I just have to keep my focus, and keep the same
mindset every time out."
Adam Bernero (0-1), making his third major league start, lost in
his first decision. Bernero, who attended high school in nearby
Sacramento, gave up four runs, six hits and three walks in 4 2/3
innings.
"I felt like I had my control, but I wasn't making pitches when
I needed to," said Bernero, who left 40 tickets for family and
friends. "I was making a lot of mistakes with my off-speed pitches
and that usually doesn't happen."
Miguel Tejada's RBI double made it 4-0 in the fifth, and the A's
added two runs in the sixth on Stairs' sacrifice fly and Eric
Chavez's run-scoring grounder.
Dean Palmer homered leading off the seventh, and consecutive
singles by Damion Easley, Brad Ausmus and Jose Macias loaded the
bases and finished Hudson.
The A's scored first for the first time since July 30.
"We broke out some today," Howe said. "I felt yesterday we
were starting to swing the bats better."
Deivi Cruz and Billy McMillon hit RBI singles off Jim Mecir, and
Bobby Higginson's run-scoring groundout pulled the Tigers to 6-4.
Grieve's homer in the bottom half came off Matt Anderson.
McMillon hit an RBI single off Jason Isringhausen in the ninth.
Game notes
A's RHP T.J. Mathews was placed on the 15-day disabled list
before the game because of tendinitis in his right elbow. RHP Omar
Olivares was activated from the DL. ... Tigers C/1B Robert Fick was
to start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. ...
Detroit OF Juan Encarnacion was not in the starting lineup for the
third straight game. ... Tejada extended his career-high hitting
streak to 13 with his fifth-inning double. ... Easley stretched his
season-high hitting streak to 11 with a single in the seventh. ...
Terrence Long went 3-for-4 and is 14-for-37 (.378) in his last nine
games. ... Hudson has allowed the Tigers six earned runs in 29
career innings (1.86 ERA).
