Rockies pound 22 hits in rout of Expos

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MONTREAL (AP) -- The Rockies feel at home at Olympic Stadium.

Jeff Cirillo went 4-for-6 with a career-high seven RBIs and Larry Walker had his fourth four-hit game of the season to lead Colorado over the Montreal Expos 14-2 Saturday night.

Cirillo had a two-run single in the first, an RBI single in the fifth, a two-run double in the sixth and another two-run single in the ninth.

"At least I won't have to hear people say that it was a Coors Field thing," Cirillo said. "I make the All-Star game and you've got Bob Costas saying, `What if Babe Ruth played at Coors Field?' and `What if Ted Williams played at Coors Field?' It almost feels like you're being belittled a little bit."

Colorado, which set a team record on May 3 with 24 hits in a 16-7 rout of the Expos at Coors Field, had 22 hits off five pitchers and has outscored the Expos 24-5 in consecutive games.

"They really overwhelmed us the last two nights," Montreal manager Felipe Alou said. "It looked like we were playing at Coors Field."

Overall, the Rockies have won four of five.

Jeffrey Hammonds also had four hits as the Rockies won consecutive road games for just the fourth time this season.

"You play like we have the last two games, you should win," Walker said. "It doesn't matter who we're playing right now, if we play games like we just did, then there's nobody that can beat us. But it's tough to do that every day."

Masato Yoshii (5-12) allowed both runs and five hits in eight innings, winning for the first time in eight starts since June 29. Yoshii had lost his previous five decisions.

Todd Helton walked and singled in his first two plate appearances to reach base safely for the 11th straight time. He had an RBI grounder in the fifth, falling one short of Eric Young's team record.

"That's a hard deal to do because you're going to make a mistake, just like I swung at a bad pitch," Helton said. "It's hard to go up there 12, 13 times in a row and be disciplined, and not only get hits but not swing at bad pitches to take walks and get on base."

Helton went 1-for-2, leaving his major league-leading average at .387. He is 7-for-8 with five walks in the first three games of the road trip. "You don't really think about it or analyze it," he said. "You just go out there and, hopefully, get hits and drive in runs. It's not that complicated."

Walker, who hit a grand slam, doubled, and walked three times Friday night, reached safely in each of his five plate appearances to extend his streak to 10.

Walker was hit by a pitch in the first, singled in the third and again in the fifth. He hit an RBI double in the sixth and doubled again in the seventh, tying his career best with his 25th career four-hit game.

"Get a hit, get a walk, get hit by a pitch, hope a guy makes an error - that's what gets you on base," Walker said. "I've made it a few times in a row, it's no big deal."

Expos starter Trey Moore (1-2) allowed six runs and 11 hits in 4 2-3 innings.

Cirillo's two-run single and Neifi Perez's sixth homer in the third put Colorado ahead 3-0.

Jose Vidro's RBI double in the fourth cut the lead to 3-1, but Colorado chased Moore in the fifth on Hammonds' RBI double, Helton's run-scoring grounder and Cirillo's RBI single.

Montreal's Andy Tracy hit his sixth homer in the bottom half to make it 6-2.

"It was a rough night for us," Tracy said. "They got some big hits and a couple of bleeders in there."

Colorado scored four in the sixth off Felipe Lira to go ahead 10-2 and added four more in the ninth.

Game notes
Cirillo's single in the fifth was his 1,000th career hit. He had six RBIs against San Francisco on June 28. ... Young reached base safely 12 consecutive times from Sept. 19-24, 1993. ... The Rockies have won just four of their last 18 games away from Coors Field. Colorado is 21-38 on the road. ... The Rockies hadn't won consecutive road games since July 2-3. ... With LHP Scott Downs placed on the 15-disabled list, Moore switched spots in the rotation with Mike Thurman, who is to start Sunday. ... Tim Raines and Jim Fanning were inducted into the Expos' hall of fame prior to the game. Raines made hit debut with Montreal in 1979 and was a NL All-Star in each of his first seven full seasons with the Expos. Fanning was the team's first general manager and led the Expos to their only postseason appearance in 1981 during the first of his two stints as the team's manager.
