Brewers come back from early deficit

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- What began as a bad evening for the Milwaukee Brewers turned out more than fine.

Pinch-hitter Tyler Houston homered to break a ninth-inning tie, and the Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.

Pittsburgh opened the first inning with four consecutive hits and took a 3-0 lead against John Snyder.

"We've struggled offensively and the last thing you want to do is give up three runs in the first inning," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. "You know you still have eight innings but you also think about the way we've struggled all year to score runs."

Houston, batting for Angel Echevarria, drove a 2-0 pitch from Josias Manzanillo (1-1) over the right-field wall for his 14th home run. Houston had been 0-for-6 as a pinch-hitter this season.

It was Houston's fourth career pinch-hit home run.

"You go up and look for a good pitch because there's a good chance you're only going to get one to hit," Houston said.

Once Manzanillo fell behind, Houston figured he was going to get a fastball and that's what happened. He drove the ball but didn't know if it was high enough to clear the wall.

"I'm busting my tail running because I knew it was at least in the gap and I had to get into scoring position," Houston said. "I heard it hit the (auxilary) scoreboard and that was a good sound because I knew then it was over the wall."

Curtis Leskanic (2-2) pitched a perfect eighth for his second victory in the series and Bob Wickman finished for his 16th save. The Pirates had just one baserunner over the last four innings.

Warren Morris tripled to start the Pirates first and scored on Jason Kendall's single. Wil Cordero singled and Brian Giles' hit drove in the second run. Kevin Young added a sacrifice fly.

"We let (Snyder) get in a groove and he didn't give us anything after that," Pirates manager Gene Lamont said.

Milwaukee scored twice in the fourth against Jimmy Anderson, who had given up just one unearned run in 14 2-3 innings during his previous two starts.

James Mouton led off with a single, stole second and scored on a double by Geoff Jenkins, who scored on Echevarria's single. Milwaukee tied it in the the fifth when Henry Blanco singled, advanced on two groundouts and scored on Mouton's single.

"I'm mad at myself for squandering a lead," Anderson said. "I have to pitch better with a lead."

After allowing the four hits in the first, Snyder held the Pirates to three singles in the next six innings.

"It didn't look like a very good start," Lopes said. "Actually, it wasn't. But he settled down and coasted the rest of the way."
