Beltre drives in career-high 6 runs

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DENVER (AP) -- Davey Johnson expects big numbers from Gary Sheffield and Eric Karros. But Adrian Beltre and Alex Cora?

Beltre had a career-high six RBIs -- including his second grand slam of the year -- and Alex Cora had two homers and five RBIs Thursday as the Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the Colorado Rockies 16-11.

Adrian Beltre of the Dodgers watches his second grand slam of the season leave the Coors Field yard in the third inning Thursday.

"They are so young," Johnson said. "You can't expect that from them, but you are glad when they happen."

Beltre went 4-for-6 and Cora was 4-for-5, setting career highs for hits and RBIs as the Dodgers won for the seventh time in nine games.

"I had opportunities with men in scoring position," Beltre said. "I got my chance today and got lucky, got my pitch to hit and swung at it."

Los Angeles, which overcame four errors, tied its season high for runs and set a season high with 20 hits.

"Those are the flip sides of those two guys," Johnson said. "They provided the offense, but they can't be happy with the way they played defense."

As both teams scored in double digits at Coors Field for the fourth time this season, Dodgers starter Eric Gagne was pounded for nine runs -- six earned -- and 11 hits in 4 1-3 innings. He is winless in his last seven starts.

Larry Walker went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs and Jeff Cirillo had two hits and three RBIs for the Rockies, who lost for the 18th time in 22 games.

"We have to be discouraged by the outcome," Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "The offense should have been enough, but we couldn't find a guy to get outs."

Colorado's Kevin Jarvis was tagged for seven runs -- just one earned -- and seven hits in three innings.

Los Angeles fell behind 3-0 in the first, took a 7-3 lead with a six-run third, then saw Colorado tie it in the fourth. The Dodgers broke open the game with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, taking a 14-8 lead.

Onan Masaoka (1-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning for the win. Loser Giovanni Carrara (0-1), who followed Jarvis, gave up seven runs and seven hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Neifi Perez's RBI single and Cirillo's two-run single put Colorado ahead in the first.

Beltre hit an RBI single in the second, and the Dodgers went ahead in the third on Gary Sheffield's RBI single, Beltre's slam and Cora's solo homer -- the fourth time this year the Dodgers hit consecutive homers. The inning was set up by Cirillo's throwing error on Mark Grudzielanek's one-out grounder to third.

The Dodgers have hit eight slams in a single season for the first time since the Brooklyn Dodgers did it in 1952. Beltre also hit one May 21 at Florida.

Colorado, which had 15 hits, closed to 7-5 in the third on Cirillo's RBI single and Brent Mayne's run-scoring grounder, then tied it in the fourth on Todd Helton's two-run single.

Los Angeles regained the lead in the fifth on Beltre's RBI single and Cora's three-run homer off Carrara (0-1).

Mayne hit a solo home run in the bottom half, but RBI singles by Sheffield, Todd Hundley and Cora increased the lead to 14-8 in the sixth. Devon White and Sheffield had RBI singles for Los Angeles in the eighth. Walker homered in the bottom half.

"It was a long game," Cirillo said. "A long, long, long, long ... did I say long?"
