RECAP
MESA, Arizona (Ticker) -- Julio Zuleta blasted a pair of mammoth home runs and the Chicago Cubs homered five times -- none by Sammy Sosa -- in a 14-12 victory over a split squad of Chicago White Sox. Sosa was 1-for-2 with a single, stolen base and two runs scored as the Cubs opened their exhibition season. He was overshadowed for a day by Zuleta, a 6-6, 230-pound Panamanian first baseman who launched a pair of bombs off the scoreboard in left field and drove in three runs. Zuleta replaced Mark Grace, who was 3-for-3 with a three-run homer in the third and five RBI. Damon Buford, fighting for time in the Cubs's crowded outfield, went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. Ismael Valdes was tagged for five runs and six hits in his debut for the Cubs, while Jon Lieber picked up the win despite allowing three runs in three innings. Kerry Lacy retired the side in order in the ninth to get a save. In their respective White Sox debuts, Jose Valentin was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, while Cal Eldred allowed a run in two innings. Loser Jason Secoda was tagged for five runs and six hits in 1 1/3 innings. Before the game, Cubs righthander Kerry Wood threw 30 pitches off the mound and faced two batters. He reported no pain in the area of his surgically repaired elbow, although he has yet to fully let loose.
