Detroit obtains experienced guard in Holland-Corn

SportsTicker

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Shock on Tuesday acquired veteran guard Kedra Holland-Corn and a 2004 draft pick from the Sacramento Monarchs for the draft rights to former Tennessee guard Kara Lawson.

The Shock took Lawson with the fifth overall pick in Friday's WNBA draft, one of their two choices in the first round. Detroit's other first-round round selection was Cheryl Ford, the daughter of Utah Jazz star Karl Malone.

"We believe Kara Lawson would have been a great guard for the organization," Detroit coach Bill Laimbeer said. "We felt it was important to add experience that could be utilized this season and contribute immediately as our top priority is to compete this year."

The 5-foot-8 Holland-Corn, selected by Sacramento in the second round of the 1998 draft, has averaged 10.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game during her four-year WNBA career.

In seven playoff games in 2000 and 2001, Holland-Corn averaged 12.6 points and 4.4 rebounds.

"Our organization is ecstatic," Laimbeer added. "Acquiring a veteran player such as Kedra, who has tremendous playoff experience, will really help our young players understand what it takes to win and compete for the championship."
