Mystics stay close, can't stop Comets

HOUSTON (AP) -- Tina Thompson scored 16 points to lead the Houston Comets to a 68-60 victory over Washington on Tuesday night, dropping the Mystics one game behind Detroit for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Washington closed the first half with a 14-3 run to take a 35-33 lead and stayed close for most of the second half, but the Mystics could never overtake Houston.

The game's seventh and final tie was 53-53 with just over four minutes left and Houston then closed the game with a 15-7 run to hand the Mystics their fourth straight loss.

Chamique Holdsclaw led the Mystics with 18 points, while Murriel Page had 13 and Vicky Bullett added 10.

Cynthia Cooper added 15 points for the Comets, who have already clinched a playoff berth in the WNBA's Western Conference, while Janeth Arcain had 12.

Houston's Sheryl Swoopes sat out the game with a sprained right index finger.
