| FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- UCLA defender Steve Shak was
selected by the New York/New Jersey MetroStars as the No. 1
selection in the Major League Soccer draft on Sunday.
Shak led UCLA to the NCAA College Cup in 1999 and helped the Bruins win the national title in 1997.
Kansas City had the No. 2 choice and also selected a defender, Nick Garcia of Indiana. Garcia led the Hoosiers to the last two NCAA titles.
Colorado followed and selected goalkeeper Adin Brown from William & Mary. The Rapids dealt the No. 5 pick and a first-round pick in 2001 to Dallas for the third spot.
Dallas had dealt striker Dante Washington to Columbus to obtain the third choice.
Chicago went fourth and took defender Carlos Bocanegra of UCLA. Dallas followed with Aleksey Korol, a forward from Indiana. Los Angeles drafted Danny Califf, a defender from Maryland.
Colorado had the seventh choice and went with Wes Hart, a midfielder from Washington. Next came San Jose, which tabbed Travis Mulraine, a midfielder from Trinidad & Tobago.
Kansas City selected John Wilson, a midfielder from Charleston. Colorado then went with Alan Woods, a Clemson defender. Los Angeles chose Sasha Victorine, a UCLA midfielder, and D.C. United completed the first round by drafting Bobby Convey, a forward from Penn Charter High School in Philadelphia.
The draft lasted six rounds, with 72 selections.
