BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (Ticker) -- Joe Cannon made several clutch saves in the final 10 minutes of regulation as the San Jose Earthquakes and Miami Fusion battled to the first 100-minute draw in MLS history, a scoreless deadlock. Cannon stopped Andy Williams from 10 yards after the Miami midfielder made a series of moves to shake free in the box. He also stopped Eric Wynalda, the U.S. National team's all-time leading scorer, on a free kick from just outside the box in the 89th minute. Earthquakes central defenders Mauricio Wright and John Doyle were able to contain Miami's three-pronged attack. Wynalda, Diego Serna and Roy Lassiter scored for the Fusion in a 3-1 rout of the MetroStars last week but were contained by the San Jose defense. Wynalda had the best scoring chance of a scoreless first half. The veteran turned and whipped a quick shot from 12 yards toward the top right corner of the net, but Cannon tipped it over the bar. The Fusion had the better scoring chances in the first half as goalkeeper Jeff Cassar rarely was called upon to make a save. San Jose was without top striker Ronald Cerritos, who is competing for El Salvador's National team in World Cup qualifying. Iranian striker Khodadad Azizi, playing his second game for the Earthquakes, shifted from attacking midfield to a forward role alongside Abdul Thompson Conteh. Travis Mulraine, San Jose's first-round pick in the 2000 draft, made his first start for the Earthquakes in central midfield. He had an effective first half before being replaced by Esmundo Rodriguez early in the second. Midfielder Jim Rooney got a start at midfield for Miami, replacing Martin Machon, who missed the contest to play for Guatemala in World Cup qualifying.
