EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Adolfo Valencia scored a goal and added an assist Saturday night as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars beat defending Major League soccer champion D.C. United 3-2.
The MetroStars (1-1), who drew an announced crowd of 27,322 for
their first home game since signing German national team star
Lothar Matthaeus, went ahead when Alex Comas converted a penalty
kick in the 11th minute. Referee Ricardo Valenzuela awarded the
penalty and issued a yellow card for dissent to D.C. captain Jeff
Agoos after defender Carey Talley dragged down Valencia in the
penalty area.
Brian Kelly made it 2-0 in the 23rd, putting the rebound of a
Valencia shot past goalkeeper Tom Presthus.
Valencia, cut from Colombia's national team last week, scored on
a diving header in the 56th minute off a curving left-footed free
kick by Mark Chung. The MetroStars were awarded the free kick after
Matthaeus was fouled just outside the penalty area.
United (0-2), which has won three of four MLS titles, scored its
first goal of the year in the 63rd minute when Jaime Moreno
converted a penalty kick after Matthaeus pulled him down.
United was without Marco Etchverry, serving a one-game
suspension for his ejection in last week's season-opening 4-0 loss
to Los Angeles.
