After we opened another case for The Berman Files, Page 2 readers flooded us with more than 1,000 letters suggesting nicknames for the budding U.S. tennis star Andy Roddick.
"Golden" Roddick Not only is he tennis' golden boy, but goldenrod is a pretty flower, and Andy is nothing but a pretty boy. Jameson Ahern Soldotna, Ark. Andy "Neur" Roddick He has "crazy" game and will be giving opponents bouts of mental anguish as his game continues to improve. Michael Beaverton, Ore. "And The Cradle Will" Roddick This diaper dandy is making waves. Mark Filla St. Paul, Minn. Andy "Hot" Roddick Just like a classic hot rod, he looks good, has lots of speed and power, and gets the girls. Raphael Vallejo, Calif. "Baseline Boy" He's like a Backstreet Boy, except he plays tennis. TJ Morton Seattle "Kid Roddick" Like Kid Rock -- the hard-rocking musician. Not sure if he'll like being called kid, but hey ... he is young. "Baw wit da baw." JR Wymer West Des Moines, Iowa "Tennis Rod-Man" It evokes Dennis Rodman who makes me laugh on general principle. Second, Roddick plays tennis and since his name is Roddick, he is the Rod-man. Steve Bonner San Francisco "Sir Crampsalot" Did you see the French Open? Adam Orem, Utah "A-Rodicator" Sounds like "eradicator," which most of the high-brows who follow tennis should pick up lickety-split. Also, the nickname seems to be a good fit the way he's been mowing down his competition of late. Also, a reference to a squash-playing character from the comedy group "Kids in the Hall." Hal Cohen Lafayette Hill, Pa. "Handy Dandy" He's handy with a racket, dandy with his feet, and it's catchy. Susan E. Houston "Rowdy" Roddick He's a wild man! And besides, tennis needs a guy named "Rowdy". Tim Hatch Miamisburg, Ohio And "E" Roddick He's so good it makes you feel dirty. Greg Pfiffner Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio "A & D" Like the lubricant, suitable for Andy's slick court movement. Plus, its primary use is for kids in diapers, which fits the young phenom thing. Finally, its phonetically equivalent to Andy. John Golden Grand Haven, Mich. "Little Red Roddick Hood" This young buck is red hot. With that 129 mph serve of his, he makes tennis seem like child's play, and it won't be long before this kid defeats a perennial 'big bad wolf' in a major. Mo Rochester, N.Y. "Hurricane" Andrew Matt Novak Wisconsin "Bam Bam" Like the son of Barney Rubble in "The Flintstones." Young Andy holds his racket and hits with power, just like little Bam Bam swings his club with startling power. Caudine de Smet Brugge West Vlaanderen, Belgium "Bad Andy, Good Tennis" Ryan Bennett St.Pete, Fla. "Razor" Roddick He's got razor sharp groundstrokes and a serve that will cut you to pieces. Brad Gross New York, N.Y. "The Heir" He is the next in a line of a great American tennis legacy. Marc McCloskey Destrehan, La. "Ace-Rod" ESPN the magazine hit the nail on the head in its article profiling Roddick. DB Caulfield New York "Andro" Because he's a bout to get bigger and bigger! Maurice Smith Roosevelt, N.Y Because he hits the ball as hard as Mark McGwire. The G Scotch Plains, N.J. "The Lightning" Roddick His lightning fast serves leave opponents shocked. Simply electrifying! Walter Kluss Clifton, N.J. "Chaotic" Roddick Carl Goode Orlando, Fla. Roddickulous Because he's cocky enough to pick a nickname that's already being used by a future MLB hall of famer. And he hasn't proven anything yet. So until then, he gets stuck with this nickname.
