Ugandan swimmer accused of sexual assault

ADELAIDE, Australia -- An Ugandan Olympic swimmer arrested in Adelaide on a sexual-assault charge was returned to Sydney by police.

Joe Atuhaire, 22, was charged by Sydney police with sexual intercourse without consent involving a 17-year-old girl in the Sydney suburb of Lidcombe last Wednesday.

He was arrested in the Adelaide suburb of Seaton on Saturday. The extradition order was unopposed in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.

Atuhaire was to be flown back to Sydney later Monday to appear in court. Police said Atuhaire has had his visa canceled.

Atuhaire, from Kampala, was eliminated from competition on the first full day of competition at the games Sept. 16. He recorded a time of 1 minute, 22.35 seconds in the first heat of the 100-meter breaststroke, the slowest of 65 competitors.

Court allows Bulgarian lifter to compete
SYDNEY, Australia -- A Bulgarian weightlifter won a silver medal Monday at the Sydney Olympics after a sports court overturned a drug-related ban on the country's entire weightlifting team.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the International Weightlifting Federation had violated its own rules by failing to give the Bulgarians a chance to pay a fine before the entire team was banned.

Competing in the 231-pound class, Alan Tsagaev finished second to Hossein Tavakoli of Iran.

The IWF on Friday had suspended the Bulgarian federation and all of its athletes for a year after three Bulgarians tested positive for a banned weight-shedding substance at the Olympics.

The court said the IWF should have first given the Bulgarians the opportunity to pay a $50,000 fine -- a procedure it followed earlier in the games after a scandal involving Romanian weightlifters.

IWF rules impose the fine or teamwide ban when a national federation has three lifters fail drug testing within a 12-month period.

Tsagaev, who has not failed a doping test, argued that he had been unfairly barred from the games.

Dantzscher's father still in critical condition
SYDNEY, Australia -- The father of U.S. women's gymnast Jamie Dantzscher remained in critical but stable condition Monday, recovering from head injuries he suffered in a car accident.

John Dantzscher underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain Friday. His seven children, Jamie included, plan to leave Sydney on Tuesday and return to their home in California.

John Dantzscher and another daughter, Jennifer, were riding in a taxicab in downtown Sydney when it was hit by a bus. Jennifer, 21, was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.

Jamie Dantzscher was part of the U.S. women's team that finished fourth.

Three hurt after bus accident
SYDNEY, Australia -- Three people suffered minor injuries Monday when two buses collided near the SuperDome at Olympic Park.

Police said a government transit bus collided with an Olympic media transport bus, then crashed into traffic lights and a fence. One driver was trapped for a short time.

The driver was one of those taken to a nearby hospital. One of the injured suffered suspected broken ribs, a police spokesman said, but it was unclear whether it was the bus driver.
