They've now scored three goals in the last 12 periods of hockey, going back to the 14:47 mark of the first period of Game 2. You might be able to scrape by with 1-0 wins against some teams, but you can't do that against the Detroit Red Wings, who are going to get two goals a game. They're too good offensively not to. But the most underrated thing about the Wings is how good they are defensively. Gosh, they shut you down. Paul Maurice mixed and matched. He took Sami Kapanen off the Ron Francis line and rotated left wingers -- he was trying anything he could to get an advantage. The biggest thing that could have been a turning point was Francis hitting the post. As I said on the air, the Detroit Red Wings had to feel they were at least owed that after all the posts they hit in Game 3. All in all, Detroit just kept coming. They're like a machine. They're patient when they have to be. They're great defensively. They wait for their chances. And if they have a chance to open it up on you, they go for it. The Hurricanes were an underrdog coming in, so it's not as if they can just tweak a couple of things heading into Game 5. They don't have the firepower. They have to continue to play a grinding style and hope they can keep Detroit off the scoreboard and then capitalize on a bounce or a power play or something like that. Game 4 was played mostly five-on-five, which is what they wanted and they still couldn't get it done. Bill Clement is a hockey analyst for ESPN.
