MONTREAL (AP) -- Wade Flaherty must have been paying attention to John Vanbiesbrouck's work against the Montreal Canadiens. Flaherty stopped 33 shots, and Roman Hamrlik and Dave Scatchard scored 28 seconds apart in the third period Saturday night to lead the New York Islanders to a 2-1 victory over the Canadiens, completing a home-and-home sweep. Making his second start of the season for New York, Flaherty posted his second win. Vanbiesbrouck stopped 37 shots in the Islanders' 2-1 victory Friday night at the Nassau Coliseum. "We gave up 30-plus shots but I saw most of those shots," Flaherty said. "A lot of them were from outside the perimeter. Any time you can do that, you've got a good chance of winning some games." Hamrlik scored his team-leading fifth goal, an unassisted tally 5:40 into the third, to break a scoreless tie. Scatchard made it 2-0 at 6:08 when he backhanded a loose puck over Canadiens goalie Jose Theodore and just under the crossbar. "Any time you get a 2-0 lead, it gives you a little breathing room," Flaherty said. "We were fortunate we did have that lead because they came back and got the one, and then put on some pressure." Patrice Brisebois scored his third of the season on a power play with just over five minutes left in the third to draw Montreal within one. The Canadiens lost for the first time in six home games (4-1-1-0) this season. Brad Isbister generated several good scoring chances for the Islanders, though he wasn't able to convert any of them. Hamrlik scored after he pounced on Trevor Linden's turnover and blasted a slap shot from the top of the left-wing circle. The puck barely got through Theodore's pads and trickled just inside the far post. "I just saw him lose the puck in the middle of the ice and I jumped on it," Hamrlik said. "I just tried to hit the net and it was a lucky shot, it went through." The Canadiens were suddenly two goals down when Scatchard's backhander off a scramble in front of Theodore got by the Montreal goalie for his second of the season. "I don't know what happened," Theodore said. "I just turned around and I saw two guys right in my crease. The puck was loose and I didn't really know what to do, and (Scatchard) put it in the net." With Flaherty out of position, Brisebois fired into a wide open net at 14:46 to make it 2-1 as the Canadiens finally converted on their seventh power play of the game. "I knew once they got one, they were coming and there was nothing anyone could do," Flaherty said. "You just hope the guys can keep up what they were doing, and challenge the shooters. We were fortunate to pull through." The Islanders, just 3-for-38 with the man-advantage, failed to score in three attempts, one night after going scoreless in six chances.
