Troy Aikman
Aikman is sacked by Hugh Douglas.
Troy Aikman was waived by the Cowboys on March 7, 2001, a day before he was due a $7 million bonus and seven-year contract extension. He retires on April 9. ... A week after announcing his retirment, Aikman accepts a job with Fox as an NFL game analysts. He works alongside play-by-play announcer Dick Stockton and former teammate Daryl Johnston. ... Aikman's final season in Dallas was marred by injury. He missed five games and was knocked out of three more, all in the first quarter. When he did play he was not the Troy Aikman that had been one of the NFL's most consistent quarterbacks. He finished as the lowest rated starting quarterback (64.3) in the NFC. ... Dallas' 5-11 record was the worst since Aikman's rookie season.

    1999: Dallas snuck into the playoffs with an 8-8 regular-season record. In a must-win game against the Giants on the final weekend of the season, Aikman completed 23-of-32 passes for 288 yards. Included in that was a 90-yard touchdown pass to Jason Tucker, which was the longest regular-season completion of his career. ... In Dallas' only playoff game (a 27-10 loss to the Vikings) Aikman completed 22-of-38 passes for 286 yards. It was the fifth highest playoff passing total of his career. ... His two touchdown passes against New Orleans (12/24) gave him 156 for his career, breaking Danny White's club record of 155. ... Suffered a concussion against Minnesota (11/26) and was forced to miss the Cowboys' next two games. It was the first time in his career he was forced to miss games because of a concussion.

    1998: Aikman led the Cowboys back to the playoffs with a 10-6 regular-season record in Chan Gailey's first season as head coach. However, Dallas' playoff run was short, ending with a loss to the Cardinals. ... He was fourth in the NFC and eighth in the NFL with a quarterback rating of 88.5. He finished the season with and amazing five interceptions in 315 pass attempts and a NFC low 1.6 interception percentage (second lowest in the NFL). Aikman threw just three interceptions in his last 289 regular season pass attempts (1.0 percent) and was sacked just nine times in 324 pass plays (once per 36.0 pass plays). ... Aikman missed five games with a fractured left clavicle (non-throwing shoulder) suffered against Denver (9/13). It was the first time he had missed a start due to injury since 1994.

    Aikman had a decent year statistically. However, the Cowboys finished the regular season 6-10 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1990. ... Aikman began the season by breaking yet another club record -- career starts by a quarterback. Aikman passed Staubach's club record of 114 when he logged his 115th start against Arizona (9/7). For the year, Aikman led the Cowboys in passing for a club-record ninth time. ... Suffered the fifth concussion of his NFL career on the second series against Philadelphia (10/26) and did not return to the game.

    1996: Dallas slipped some, finishing the regular season with a 10-6 record, good enough for a wild-card berth in the playoffs. However, Aikman had another solid season. He finished with a quarterback rating of 80.1 -- good for fifth in the NFC and 12th in the NFL. He also finished second in the NFL in completion percentage at 63.7 percent. ... He earned his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl selection, tying Roger Staubach for the most appearances by a Dallas quarterback. ... With his 169 yards passing against New England (12/15), Aikman passed Roger Staubach's club record of 22,700 career passing yards and tied Danny White's team record with his fourth 3,000-yard passing season.

    Super Bowl XXX was Aikman's third title.
    Led Dallas to a 12-4 record and third Super Bowl championship in four years. Set a club record by connecting on 10 straight passes in Super Bowl XXX victory over the Steelers. He threw a touchdown pass for a club-record fifth straight playoff game. In the NFC championship game against Green Bay, Aikman moved past Roger Staubach (2,820 yards) to become Dallas' all-time leader in post-season passing yards. ... Selected to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl. ... Set a club record with 184 straight pass attempts without an interception and finished second in the NFC with a quarterback rating of 93.6.

    1994: Led the Cowboys to a 12-4 regular-season record. However, Dallas was unable to produce a third-consecutive Super Bowl title. Dallas reached the NFC championship game where it lost to the 49ers 38-28. In the NFC championship game, he broke team records by throwing for 380 yards vs. San Francisco. ... Selected to his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl ... Finished second in the NFL with a 64.5 percent completion rate. ... Suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee on Nov. 20 vs. Washington which caused him to miss the next two games.

    1993: Led Dallas to their second straight Super Bowl championship. Threw a team record 111 consecutive postseason passes without an interception. Suffered a concussion in the NFC Championship Game and missed most of the second half on Jan. 23 vs. San Francisco. Came back a week later and completed 19-of-27 passes for 207 yards to lead Dallas to a 30-13 victory over Buffalo. Completed an amazing 74.4 percent of his passes in the playoffs. ... Posted a 99.0 quarterback rating, the second highest in team history and second in the NFL, and he led the league with a 69.1 percent completion rate. ... He was the top vote-getter of all players in the Pro Bowl.

    Aikman was MVP of Super Bowl XXVII.
    Aikman completed 22-of-30 passes for 273 yards and four TDs to earn MVP honors in the Cowboys 52-17 victory over the Bills in Super Bowl XXVII. With his MVP award, Aikman joined Jim Plunkett and Terry Bradshaw as the only other quarterbacks drafted first overall to win the Super Bowl MVP award. ... Completed 24-of-34 passes (70.6 percent) in NFC championship game victory over the 49ers. ... Reached the 10,000 passing yards mark in only his 52nd career game which was faster than any quarterback in team history. ... His 3,445 yards passing ranked second in the NFC and third best in team history. ... Did not miss a game during the season due to injury for the first time in his career.

    1990: After winning just one game the previous season, helped lead the Cowboys to seven wins. Of those seven wins, six of them were fourth-quarter comebacks. Separated his right shoulder during the Dec. 23 loss at Philadelphia and missed the final game of the season.

  • Regular season: 226-for-399, 2,579 yds., 11 TDs, 18 INTs

    1989: Selected by the Cowboys in the first round (first pick overall) out of UCLA, Aikman played in 11 games, starting all 11 of them. The five games that he missed were due to a broken left index finger suffered on Oct. 1 vs. NY Giants. ... Against the Rams (12/3), became the first Cowboys quarterback to throw four TD passes in a game since 1987. ... The first rookie quarterback to start a season opener for Dallas since Roger Staubach in 1969.
