Out with the old, in with the new

KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- To comprehend the infusion of new blood in this year's Pro Bowl, take a look at who is not playing quarterback for the NFC.

Donovan McNabb led NFL quarterbacks with 629 yards rushing in the regular season.
Brett Favre didn't get enough votes, and mid-thirtysomethings Steve Beuerlein and Chris Chandler didn't put up worthy enough numbers. Where's Kurt Warner? He's here but still cleaning out the cob webs from a late-season concussion.

Out with the old and in with Daunte Culpepper, Jeff Garcia and Donovan McNabb. Those three will be running the offense for NFC head coach Dennis Green. Their arrival signals a new breed of play-making quarterback that relishes the run as much as the pass.

"It just shows that things change and that things are really happening at quarterback," said Culpepper, who turned 24 last Sunday. "It's good to see new faces. Hopefully we'll bring a lot of excitement like the guys before us."

"We're three mobile quarterbacks, and that says a lot about what the game has done in the past couple of years," said McNabb, 25. "The game has changed where now you have guys who are able to move around in the pocket to find their receivers and be more involved in the offense."

Culpepper and McNabb moved to the head of the much-celebrated quarterback class of 1999 with breakthrough seasons.

Culpepper proved naysayers wrong by throwing for 3,937 yards and a league-high 33 touchdowns and rushing for 470 yards and seven touchdowns. McNabb did everything but vacuum the Veterans Stadium carpet in leading the Eagles to their first playoff berth in five seasons. His 3,365 passing yards and 629 rushing yards accounted for three quarters of Philadelphia's offense.

"We're all second-year guys, but like I was telling them, I'm definitely the old guy, being 30," Garcia said.

Garcia's road to success wasn't as direct. He spent five seasons in the Canadian Football League before joining the 49ers. His sophomore season was just as surprising as his Pro Bowl teammates as Garcia threw for an NFC-best 4,278 passing yards and 31 touchdowns.

It just shows that things change and that things are really happening at quarterback. It's good to see new faces. Hopefully we'll bring a lot of excitement like the guys before us.
Daunte Culpepper

This wave of new talent made for a minor controversy when the Pro Bowl voting was announced in December. The NFC had four deserving quarterbacks but only three roster spots. McNabb didn't make the cut despite being an MVP candidate, but Warner's injury made room for him.

Garcia believes the addition of McNabb was just.

"He had a great year, and he was healthy all year long," Garcia said. "Not to knock Kurt because he was definitely winging it when he had the opportunities, but Donovan is definitely deserving of this opportunity. He helped lead that team to the playoffs this year. I'm happy for him."

Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp is glad he won't have to chase Culpepper, McNabb and Garcia around Aloha Stadium. He sees the three quarterbacks making return trips to Hawaii, particularly Culpepper.

"Daunte just stepped on the field and he'll be here for the next 10 years," Sapp said. "There's a bunch of new guys. There's a changing of the guard in the NFL, away from the Jerry Rices and the Bruce Smiths, all the guys who toted this league through the '80s and the '90s. There's a whole new millennium of players right now, and the quarterbacks are leading it."
