About the play: The Chiefs continue their search for consistent plays from consistent playmakers. Elvis Grbac and Derrick Alexander are trying to become those players. Kansas City will try to get Alexander the ball because he is a big-play threat who needs the ball in different spots on the field. The Chiefs will also move the pocket against a good Ravens defense. Grbac will do some half-rollout passes so he can create throwing lanes.

Keys to the play: This is a very high-percentage pass that gives Grbac nice vision to Alexander on his 10-yard speed out. This route is very simple, but effective. Grbac will send Alexander in motion so he can get a good release off the line. If he is stationary, he will have a difficult time getting off the ball.

The ball must be snapped when Alexander reaches tight end Tony Gonzalez. Alexander does not want to get too wide on his motion or he will have no room to run his route. Grbac will set up at the tackle, so he can get a good look at Alexander. Grbac will throw on his fifth step, before Alexander gets out of his break.

Alexander must keep the straight stem to his pattern and run his route at 10 yards. Grbac has tight end Tony Gonzalez on this out route and the backside receiver on a dig route if in fact Alexander does not win his matchup. If Alexander wants to be the guy, he has to win on his out route. Grbac is counting on his presence.

Critical players: It is critical that Alexander get to his depth, not longer or shorter than 10 yards. The timing cannot be late and the throw can't be behind the receiver or the pass will be intercepted and returned for a touchdown. It is also critical that Victor Riley, the Chiefs right tackle, invites Rob Burnett, the Ravens' left defensive end, inside so Grbac has no immediate threat to this vision.

When to expect the play: This is a great play any time the Ravens are playing off the receivers. This play should be legalized theft against man or three-deep coverage.

Defensive strategy: The best way to defend this out pattern is for Duane Starks, the Ravens' left cornerback, to play physical at the line of scrimmage or with outside leverage. Another way is to get an outside pass rush to pressure Grbac and force a non-rhythm throw.
