About the play: The Vikings are a big-play team, but they also execute the chain-moving throws well. Jeff George can make every throw. He gets rid of the ball so quickly that defenses can't react. The Packers will be so concerned about the big play that their cornerbacks will have to give the Vikings receivers a big cushion. George will pick a side and throw to the biggest cushion. The Vikings receivers will push their route deep and then come back toward the quarterback. George wil take his shotgun drop and throw the football to the open receiver and also to the shoulder of the receiver away from the coverage, so the receiver can run after the catch. If the free safety decide to jump one side, then George will throw to the other side. This play is very good on first and third down and can move the chains.
Keys to the play: The big key is for the Vikings receivers to get to the first-down markers (especially on third down), so when they catch their pass while moving back toward the quarterback, they are still beyond the first-down sticks. It is critical that the receivers sell the deep route before running their curl. This route has to be run at full speed to force the Packers defensive backs to turn their hips and shoulders and run to take away the deep ball. The Vikings receivers have earned that respect. | ALSO SEE Playbook: Packers' split right 28 sweep Monday night breakdown Kreidler: Choosing a tough Rhodes Monday preview: Packers at Vikings War Room preview: Packers at Vikings Baxter Bits: Packers at Vikings Vikings owner seeing Red Week 15 injury report Week 15 picks |
