Stovall to sit out rest of season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia coach Debbie Ryan on Thursday announced that junior guard Erin Stovall, who left the team indefinitely last month for undisclosed personal reasons, will not return to the team this season.

"The best thing for both of us at this time is to leave things as they are and revisit it in the Spring," Ryan said in a statement released on the school's official athletic site. "We reached a decision this week that she will not return for the remainder of the 1999-2000 season. We will miss her."

Stovall, who left the Cavaliers the week of Christmas, was Hawaii's Ms. Basketball in 1997. She was a two-year starter and a preseason first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection this season, and was second on the team in scoring with a 13.8 average when she left the team prior to a Dec. 20 game against Virginia Tech.

On Thursday, Virginia upset No. 9 North Carolina 87-68.
