N.C. State cut SMU's lead -- but not enough

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Katie Remke hit a free throw with 2 seconds remaining as Southern Methodist upset North Carolina State (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) 64-63 Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Summer Erb's layup for fifth-sseded N.C. State (20-9) tied the game at 63 with 27 seconds left. Kaayla Chones then fouled Remke, who missed her first free throw but sank the second.

The 12th-seeded Mustangs (22-8) were up 11 points with 1:46 remaining in the first half, but N.C. State cut the lead to 29-23 at intermission.

SMU led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but N.C. State scored eight unanswered points to take its first lead, 55-53, with 5:08 to go.

D-dra Rucker led SMU with 18 points, including 14 in the first half. Karlin Kennedy had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Anika Calvert added 14.

Erb led N.C. State with 21 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Chones with 13 points.
