Jackons leads La. Tech past Braves

RUSTON, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Top-seeded Louisiana Tech won its first game since legendary coach Leon Barmore announced his retirement, rolling 95-53 over Alcorn State in an NCAA Tournament first-round Midwest Region battle.

Barmore received a standing ovation from the 6,172 in attendance one day after he announced his 18th season as the Lady Techsters' coach would be his last. His final home game will take place Monday against Vanderbilt in the second round.

Tamicha Jackson finished with 24 points as Louisiana Tech improved to 31-0 in NCAA Tournament contests at home and is 12-2 overall in the first round. The Lady Techsters have won 19 straight overall and with a win Monday will improve to 13-0 in second-round games.

Jackson scored 17 points in the first half, leading Louisiana Tech to a 47-33 advantage. The Lady Techsters shot 57 percent (21-of-37) from the floor and held the Lady Braves to 38 percent (13-of-34).

Ayana Walker had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Catrina Frierson scored 12 points and Takeisha Lewis contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds for Louisiana Tech, which shot 49 percent (37-of-76). The Lady Techsters gained a 53-29 rebounding advantage and forced Alcorn State into 22 turnovers.

Cherea Wood scored 19 points on just 8-of-26 shooting and Kamrica Turk added nine for the Lady Braves in their first NCAA Tournament contest. Alcorn State shot 32 percent (19-of-59) from the field and hit just 4-of-14 3-pointers.
