BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Lashinda Winters hit the game-winning shot with 8.5 seconds remaining Friday night as Stephen F. Austin upset (unranked ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) Xavier 73-72 in a women's NCAA tournament East regional game. Winters, a 5-foot-3 sophomore guard, came off the bench to score 15 points. None were bigger than her layup that bounced around the rim several times before dropping through to give 11th-seeded Stephen F. Austin (28-3) the victory.
A 3-point attempt by Nicole Levandusky, who had five 3-pointers in the game, bounced off the back of the rim with 1.5 seconds remaining for Xavier (26-5). Xavier led 68-56 with 5:50 to play, but Stephen F. Austin outscored the Lady Musketeers 17-4 the rest of the way. Stephanie Whitmore, who had 20 points, scored seven in the final 5:02 to key Stephen F. Austin's comeback. Her 3-pointer from the top of the key with 40.2 seconds remaining cut Xavier's lead to 72-71. Winters got a chance when Shawnta Johnson came up with a steal on the defensive end of the floor for the Lady Jacks. Johnson scored 14 points for Stephen F. Austin and Tami Rater added 12 points and seven rebounds. Jennifer Phillips, who missed two free throws with 59.9 seconds to play with Xavier in front 72-68, worked inside for 19 points and Levandusky scored 17 points. Amy Waugh chipped in with 11 points and Kim Hotz finished with 10. | ALSO SEE Womens College Basketball Scoreboard Stephen F. Austin NCAA Team Report
