Kings: First consecutive losses this season

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Tired of seeing other point guards make the highlight shows every night, Baron Davis decided to take matters into his own hands.

David Wesley
David Wesley had 11 points and seven assists for the Hornets.

Davis scored a career-high 26 points and had three acrobatic dunk while leading the Charlotte Hornets to their first victory over Sacramento in over three years, 101-90 on Wednesday night.

"I just want to get the respect I think I deserve," said Davis, a second-year guard. "If I go out there night in and night out and work hard, I'll earn it. But it's something I don't have yet."

Davis wowed the Hornets with three flying dunks, but his one-handed tomahawk slam in the second quarter drew praise from both his own coach and Sacramento coach Rick Adelman.

"He's a terrific young player, extremely explosive," Adelman said. "If he always plays like he did tonight, he'll be mentioned with all the great guards in the league."

After a David Wesley miss, Davis went high over the basket and caught the rebound in his right hand. After bringing the ball back behind his head, he slammed it through the hoop and brought the crowd to its feet.

"Baron has that kind of athleticism that you see in a lot of great players and it just makes you marvel," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "When Baron plays against someone who is being mentioned a lot like (Kings guard) Jason Williams, he wants to be mentioned as well, and he wants to show that he is also a quality player."

Jamal Mashburn quietly scored a season-high 33 points for the Hornets, who beat the Kings for the first time since a 121-102 victory on Dec. 2, 1997.

Pacific Division-leading Sacramento lost consecutive games for the first time this season. The Kings lost to Atlanta, 107-99, on Tuesday night.

The Kings were without forward Peja Stojakovic, who missed his fourth straight game with a bruised right shoulder. Adelman said Stojakovic's absence hurt.

"This is where you miss Peja because he's seen these guys before and he knows how to play a Mashburn," Adelman said. "We didn't have an answer without him."

Sacramento looked tired early and never led in the game, shooting just 7-for-22 from 3-point range. The Kings also committed 16 turnovers.

Chris Webber scored 25 points and Doug Christie added 17 for Sacramento, which shot 37 percent through the first three quarters.

Charlotte shot 50 percent through the first three quarters and built an 83-64 lead.

The Hornets, leading 74-64 with 1:40 left in the third, broke the game open with a 9-0 run. Hersey Hawkins made a layup, and, after a Vlade Divac turnover, hit a 3-pointer.

Divac turned the ball over again on the Kings' next possession and Christie fouled Davis. Davis hit both free throws, Webber turned the ball over at the other end and Davis drilled a 3-pointer to end the quarter.

Charlotte, which shot 47 percent, got 11 points from Wesley. Elden Campbell scored 10.

Williams had 16 for Sacramento.

Game notes
Charlotte rookie Jamaal Magloire did not play because of a small bone chip in his left foot. Magloire said he hoped to play Friday at Washington. ... The Kings also had guard Bobby Jackson in street clothes with a contusion on his leg. ...Divac, one of the many former Hornets in the league, was cheered during pregame introductions.
