Bucks build 22-point lead and hold on

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- George Karl didn't like the win. He didn't like his players. And he didn't like the officials.

"I thought our team and the referees should be fined," the coach fumed after his Milwaukee Bucks frittered away a double-digit lead and had to hang on for a 99-91 victory Saturday night against the Washington Wizards.

The Wizards lost their seventh in a row.

"I thought our team was awful and the referees were awful," he said.

The combination of Washington making 15 of 17 free throws and 17 points from Richard Hamilton in the fourth quarter left Karl in an ornery mood.

The Bucks were called for 32 fouls while the Wizards were tagged with 27. Milwaukee shot only four free throws in the final period.

Sam Cassell scored 19 points for Milwaukee before fouling out in the fourth.

"Some of the fouls in the third and fourth quarters were incredible," Karl said.

"It's hard to play basketball sometimes when the referees are just blowing the whistle," he said. "They look at the scoreboard and try to even out the fouls. It makes the game ugly."

Hamilton, who had 18 points off the bench against the Bucks two weeks ago, sparked the Wizards again. In the fourth quarter, he was 5-for-12 from the field and 9-for-10 from the line.

He had two free throws, a three-point play, a jumper and steal during a 15-0 run that trimmed down a 22-point deficit with 5:58 left to play.

But Glenn Robinson, who had 22 points, fed Tim Thomas for a layup and then Robinson added a dunk as Milwaukee momentarily stopped the surge.

"We have to do a better job down the stretch, closing the game out," Robinson said. He had seven assists and 12 rebounds.

The Wizards made a final run when Hamilton sandwiched a pair of free throws around a technical free throw by Chris Whitney to pull Washington to 92-86 with 3:07 left.

"It was a valiant effort," Whitney said. "But we can't get down by 20 points and expect to comeback like that tonight."

Ray Allen scored 22 points and reserve Scott Williams had a season-high 11 for Milwaukee. Rod Strickland added 16 points and 11 assists for Washington.

Allen and Robinson each had six points as the Bucks outscored Washington 29-16 in the second quarter. Milwaukee built a double-digit lead as the Wizards made just six of 18 shots.

Robinson's layup late in the second quarter gave the Bucks a 19-point lead, their biggest of the half.
