INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Jalen Rose didn't realize just how on-target
he was Saturday night.
| | Jalen Rose scored 10 straight field goals in the second half Saturday on his way to 36 points for the Pacers. |
"If I had, I probably would have jacked up a few more 3's and
we wouldn't have had to go to overtime," Rose said after the
Indiana Pacers' 99-96 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.
He scored seven of his season-high 36 points in overtime.
"I was able to knock down a few shots, and my teammates did a
good job getting me open," Rose said. "The thing about having a
hot hand, you want to continue playing.
"It seems I have been in the right spot at the right time, and
the guys are certainly looking for me."
Rose, playing just his 10th game after breaking his wrist in the
preseason, hit 10 straight field goals from late in the third
quarter through the first three minutes of overtime. His drive to
the basket gave Indiana a 94-86 lead, its biggest of the game.
Jamal Mashburn and David Wesley made 3-pointers to cut Indiana's
lead to 98-96 before Rose scored the final point on a free throw
with two seconds to go.
"Jalen was really hot, shooting the ball well, and I thought we
got better defensively," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "We got
a lot of good looks and tried to keep it in Jalen's hands."
Rose missed his last three shots but still was 14-for-21 for the
game.
"We just thought that he'd start missing, but he didn't,"
Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "Overall, I'm pretty satisfied
with the effort. It's hard to lose a game like this, but we need to
learn from this game."
Charlotte trailed by seven points late in the fourth quarter,
but seven straight points from Baron Davis and a basket by Mashburn
gave the Hornets an 86-84 lead. Reggie Miller, who scored 18 points
for Indiana, tied the game with 1:24 remaining, and neither team
scored again in regulation.
The Pacers scored the first eight points of overtime on two free
throws by Travis Best and three straight baskets by Rose, who also
finished with season highs of eight assists and four steals.
Mashburn led Charlotte with 28 points, while Elden Campbell
added 18 points and 13 rebounds.
The Hornets led by five points in the first quarter and by three
until the closing minutes of the second period. After an offensive
foul and technical on Mashburn, Miller pulled Indiana to 38-36 with
a free throw, and Al Harrington's basket tied the game.
A free throw by Jermaine O'Neal, a rebound basket by Harrington
and a blocked shot and basket by O'Neal gave the Pacers their
biggest lead of the first half at 43-38.
The Pacers led 45-43 at halftime and 68-64 after three
quarters.
Game notes Charlotte forward Eddie Robinson, who missed Friday's
victory over the Clippers with a sprained right ankle, did not play
against the Pacers because of an intestinal virus. ... Rose and
Miller, the NBA's top two foul shooters, were 12-of-15 combined
Saturday, making them 163-for-177 (92.1 percent) for the season.
... O'Neal, who played a season-low 10 minutes in Friday's victory
at Boston because of a sinus ailment and swollen eye, had nine
points and six blocked shots in 38 minutes.
