Davis nets another triple-double

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Baron Davis is drawing some favorable comparisons in just his second year.

Davis had his second triple-double in three games as the Charlotte Hornets overcame a sluggish start Saturday night to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-98 for their fifth straight victory.

Davis finished with 14 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. He had 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in an 88-73 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Charlotte coach Paul Silas said Davis' play of late reminds him of another guard known for triple-doubles.

"He reminds me of Jason Kidd," Silas said. "He can rebound, shoot and make assists."

Davis didn't mind the comparison.

"(Kidd) is a great player and to be compared to him is a compliment," Davis said. "I've been watching him since high school and I've pretty much patterned my game after him."

Charlotte's Jamal Mashburn had 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Elden Campbell added 23 points.

Lamond Murray led Cleveland with 30 points.

After trailing by two at the end of the first quarter, the Hornets outscored the Cavaliers 30-18 in the second quarter. Charlotte led 60-50 at the half and pushed the lead to 14 on several occasions in the third quarter.

Cleveland pulled to 89-82 on Chris Mihm's jumper with 8:33 left and had the ball again after David Wesley missed a jump shot. But Murray missed an open 3-pointer from the right wing and the Hornets answered with a dunk from P.J. Brown to go up 91-82.

Trajan Langdon hit 3-pointer and Murray hit two free throws as Cleveland pulled to 93-87 with 6:19 left, but Charlotte went on an 11-1 run to push the lead to 104-88 and put the game out of reach.

Charlotte had lost five in a row before winning its last five. A key has been pushing the ball upcourt.

"The up-tempo game is key for us," said David Wesley, who finished with 12 points and eight assists. "Easy baskets come from great defense and we've been consistent defensively and offensively. We're in a good rhythm right now and we need to continue on this win streak."

Game notes
Charlotte had 21 more free throw attempts than Cleveland in the first half. The Hornets connected on 22-of-27 foul shots. The Cavaliers hit 5-of-6. ... The Hornets outrebounded the Cavaliers 40-32. ... Charlotte had been 8-0 when it shot better than its opponent and 0-6 when it didn't. The Hornets broke that trend, hitting 45 percent to Cleveland's 46 percent.
