DALLAS (AP) -- Gary Payton did everything he could to make sure
the Seattle SuperSonics beat Dallas five days after losing to the
Mavericks.
The All-Star guard had 28 points, including the tiebreaking
layup with just over two minutes left, as Seattle won 116-110 Tuesday night to
end the Mavericks' three-game winning streak.

Payton barely missed a triple-double, adding nine assists and
eight rebounds as the visitors reversed the result from Friday,
when Dallas defeated Seattle 99-95.
"They got us last week in Seattle so this time it was our
turn," Payton said. "But we've been losing a lot, so it didn't
matter. We wanted a road win against anybody."
Payton's drive over Steve Nash gave the SuperSonics a 112-110
lead.
Rookie Desmond Mason then blocked Shawn Bradley's layup attempt
on Dallas' next possession, and Bradley was called for an offensive
foul with 42.9 seconds left for swinging his elbows on a rebound.
Mason made two free throws with 16.8 seconds remaining for a
career-high 14 points.
Ruben Patterson added a dunk at the buzzer, finishing with 23
points and 11 rebounds. Patrick Ewing had nine points and seven
rebounds.
Seattle has back-to-back victories for the first time this
season and has won three of its last four, a sign to Payton that
his team is coming around. Strong play by youngsters like Mason and
Rashard Lewis (12 points, nine rebounds) give the 10-year veteran
Payton hope that the Sonics can be a contender.
"We've got to do that on a consistent basis," Payton said.
"If the young guys can play like that, then we'll be a good
team."
Hubert Davis matched a career-high with 32 points, 20 in the
third quarter, to help the Mavericks rally from a 14-point halftime
deficit and lead by as many as three in the fourth quarter.
"We did the same thing at home," Patterson said. "We were up
by 17 at halftime and they came back to beat us. But tonight we
kept our composure. This was real important to go out and win a
game on the road like this."
Davis, starting at shooting guard while Greg Buckner missed his
third straight game with a foot injury, went 7-for-12 from 3-point
range.
"When you get into a rhythm like that, the basket looks as big
as the arena," Davis said. "Guys are jumping at you and it
doesn't matter. That's the way it was tonight."
Dallas' Michael Finley had 23 points, and Nash had 16
points and 12 assists.
Dallas pulled to 94-90 entering the final quarter.
The Sonics made their first 16 shots of the second quarter
against the Mavericks' passive interior defense to build a 64-50
halftime lead. The only shot Seattle missed in the quarter was
Patterson's 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
Mason, a native of nearby Waxachachie, hit all four of his shots
and had 10 points during a 39-22 second quarter.
