OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Larry Hughes scored 25 points as Golden
State, the NBA's worst defensive team, held the Chicago Bulls
scoreless for nearly 8 1/2 minutes in the second half of the Warriors'
89-77 victory on Tuesday night. Antawn Jamison had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Bobby Sura had
eight assists in his first game with Golden State, which shut down
the Bulls' league-worst offense with a surprisingly strong
defensive performance. The Warriors have allowed a league-high
101.2 points per game this season. But the Warriors' victory was tempered by news that forward
Danny Fortson, the NBA's leading rebounder, will have surgery on a
stress fracture in his right foot on Wednesday. In addition, Sura
pulled up lame and left the court with an apparent ankle injury
with 4:33 left. Chicago, the league's lowest scoring team, missed 13 straight
shots and allowed Golden State to score 17 unanswered points during
the run, which began midway through the third quarter and ended on
Elton Brand's jumper with 9:47 to play. Brand had 26 points and 11 rebounds. Ron Mercer added 19 for the
Bulls, who lost their sixth straight. Chicago, winless in its first five games of a seven-game road
trip, looked good while jumping to a 21-7 lead after the first
eight minutes. But the Bulls reverted to poor shots, poor
rebounding and poor defense on Hughes, who scored 11 straight
points for Golden State in the second quarter. The Warriors led by 13 with 5:31 left, but the Bulls pulled
within five less than two minutes later on consecutive 3-pointers
by A.J. Guyton. Jamison put the game away with four points and a
dunk in the closing seconds. Golden State beat Chicago for the third straight time after
snapping a 13-game losing streak to the Bulls last season. Chris Mills started and had 12 points and 17 rebounds in place
of Fortson, who was averaging 16.3 rebounds and 16.7 points when he
went down with a right foot injury two weeks ago. In the middle of
the third quarter, the team announced that Fortson will have
surgery. No timetable was set for his return. Mookie Blaylock, averaging 7.1 assists, had a stomach virus and
also missed the game for the Warriors, who started Sura in his
place. Notes: San Francisco 49ers receiver J.J. Stokes watched the game
from courtside. ... Mills, who was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free
throw line this season, missed two in the second quarter. ...
Golden State has held its last five opponents under 100 points per
game after allowing five of its first six opponents to score more
than 100. ... Hughes, who shot 32.5 percent in the Warriors' first
seven games, was 10-of-19 on Tuesday night.
