RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

SEATTLE (AP) _ In two minutes, Gary Payton and Rashard Lewis dashed the hopes of the Golden State Warriors as the Seattle SuperSonics rolled to a 99-85 victory.

Payton had five points, two assists and a steal and Lewis had four points, a blocked shot and a steal in a 14-0 run Friday that spanned the final 56 seconds of the third quarter and the first 1:06 of the fourth for a 77-63 lead.

"My job is to create energy on defense, hit the boards and run the floor," Lewis said. He did all three as the Sonics beat the Warriors for the fourth straight time this season.

Payton waved off the media after the game, but his play spoke volumes. He had 27 points, 16 assists and four steals in 41 minutes as the Sonics handed the Warriors their fifth straight loss. Seattle's All-Star guard had 11 points and five assists in nine minutes during the fourth period.

The Sonics beat the Warriors for the ninth straight time at Key Arena and for the 15th time in the last 16 meetings overall.

"We wanted to generate offense from our defense," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said.

The Sonics opened the fourth quarter with a 17-3 spurt for an 85-66 lead capped by Jelani McCoy's layup with 7:47 left in the game.

"The Sonics made the big plays in the second half when we got lackadaisical with the ball," Jason Caffey said. "They got a couple of steals and dunks in two minutes and it was over."

Donyell Marshall led the Warriors with 27 points and Larry Hughes added 26.

Warriors coach Garry St. Jean did not fault his team's effort.

"We had some offensive breakdowns that led to easy baskets and that was it," St Jean said.

The Sonics lost their best low-post scoring threat in the third period when Vin Baker suffered a strained left hamstring with 9:38 left and the Sonics down 50-49. He did not return.

Horace Grant contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Sonics and Lewis had 13 points off the bench.

Hughes followed up a 41-point effort against the Lakers on Thursday night with a big night against the Sonics and Payton, who guarded him most of the game. Hughes connected on four of his first six shots, but was 6-for-17 the last three periods.

"We felt pretty good about our defense on him," Brent Barry said. "He got most of his points in transition and not in their set offense."

Seattle led 87-68. The Warriors ran off eight straight points on 3-pointers by Marshall and Hughes, closing to 87-76 with 5:17 left. But they got no closer.

The Sonics opened the fourth quarter with two free throws by Payton, two steals and a pair of dunks by Lewis and Payton's 3-point shot for a 77-63 lead.

Emanual Davis's 3-point shot on a cross-court feed by Payton and two free throws by Grant gave the Sonics a 68-63 lead after three quarters.

Adonal Foyle's block of Lewis's dunk attempt started a fast break, and Hughes' left-handed jam tied the game at 63-63 with 1:18 left in the third quarter. Foyle had four blocks during the third period as he also rejected shots by Payton and Baker and blocked a dunk attempt by McCoy.

Seattle led 45-43 at halftime on Payton's spectacular left-hand hook shot over Marshall in the low post.

Notes: The Warriors shot 71 percent (12-for-17) in the first period and led 30-21. ...Vernon Maxwell played in his first game since January 5 and drilled a 3-point shot from the right side on his first attempt.
