X-rays were negative. Lee stayed on the ground for several minutes, then walked off the field under his own power. The pitch appeared to be a breaking ball from Knotts, who retired 18 of his first 21 batters. Lee entered the game hitting .261 with eight homers and 28 RBI.
Wells, bothered by a blister on his pitching hand, was told Saturday he won't make start until next weekend in St. Louis. Loyd McClendon initially refused to name his replacement, but later said right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was being recalled from Triple-A Nashville.
Vogelsong was considered the key to the Jason Schmidt trade with the Giants in July 2001, but he blew out his right elbow in his second start with the Pirates that season and needed reconstructive surgery.
Right-hander Josh Fogg will return to the rotation Monday against the Cubs in Wrigley Field, but it didn't appear likely the Pirates would move him up a day to start Sunday. Fogg last pitched Wednesday in a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Nashville, where he pitched twice after a strained oblique muscle healed.
Because Wells will miss only one start, the Pirates didn't consider putting him on the 15-day disabled list.
The Pirates also sent minor league infielder Kody Kirkland to the Detroit Tigers to complete the Nov. 25 trade for first baseman Randall Simon. Kirkland hit .306 with 18 RBI last season with Bradenton of the Gulf Coast Rookie League.
Cust takes the roster spot of Gary Matthews Jr., who was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres on Friday.
The Orioles had hoped outfielder B.J. Surhoff, on the disabled list since May 4 with a strained right hamstring, would be activated this weekend. But the team elected to call up Cust after it determined Surhoff wasn't ready to play after testing out the leg before Friday's game.
Cust, a first-round draft choice of Arizona in 1997, hit .247 with three home runs and 21 RBI in 44 games with the Lynx. |
