First baseman will rejoin team in Seattle

Minnesota Twins: First baseman Doug Mientkiewicz will not go on the disabled list after spraining his left ankle over the weekend.

Mientkiewicz is staying behind in Minnesota for three days of treatment as the Twins play at Oakland on Monday night to begin a six-game road trip, team spokesman Mike Herman said. Herman said Mientkiewicz will join the team at its next stop in Seattle.

Mientkiewicz injured his ankle during Sunday's win over the Chicago White Sox. He was hurt when he stepped on infielder Joe Crede's foot while trying to retreat to third base in the second inning.

Manager Ron Gardenhire initially said he expected to place Mientkiewicz on the 15-day disabled list, but Mientkiewicz's arguments and the advice of his coaches apparently made him reconsider.

"My coaches think he'll just be out for five or six days, and I guess we can live with that," Gardenhire said Sunday.

Gardenhire will continue to manage short-handed. Outfielder Bobby Kielty still can't throw because of an injured rib cage muscle and designated hitter Matthew LeCroy is recovering from a broken nose.

Boston Red Sox: Right fielder Trot Nixon is still listed as day to day with tightness in his hamstring and was not in the lineup against the Yankees on Monday night.

Nixon was removed from Sunday's game against the Angels in the second inning for precautionary reasons after he developed tightness in both hamstrings.

Baltimore Orioles: The contract of first baseman/catcher Carlos Mendez was purchased from Triple-A Ottawa.

Mendez replaces third baseman Jose Leon, who was sent down to Ottawa after Sunday's game. Mendez will travel with the team to Anaheim, where the Orioles play Tuesday.

Mendez was second in the International League with a .384 batting average this season and has a .304 career average in 13 minor league seasons.

The Orioles were expected to activate outfielder B.J. Surhoff from the 15-day disabled list Monday to take Leon's place on the roster. But team officials said they believe Surhoff, who's been recovering from a strained hamstring, is still a few days away from being ready to play.

Cleveland Indians: The contract of right-hander Jason Phillips, who has dominated the International League this season, was purchased from Triple-A Buffalo.

Phillips is 6-0 with a 2.70 ERA in seven games. He's tied for first in the league in wins, is eighth in ERA and is limiting opponents to a .222 batting average.

To make room for Phillips on the 25-man roster, Cleveland designated right-hander Jerrod Riggan for assignment.

Riggan allowed four earned runs and seven hits over four innings in two relief stints this season. Opponents are batting .412 against him.

Philadelphia Phillies: Reliever Rheal Cormier appealed the $750 fine he received for throwing two inside pitches at Toronto pitcher Roy Halladay in a March 26 exhibition game.

Cormier is scheduled to meet with Bob DuPuy, baseball's president and chief operating officer, at the commissioner's office in New York on Tuesday.

Cormier drew a warning after the second inside pitch to Halladay, who had beaned Phillies slugger Jim Thome the previous inning.

Phillies manager Larry Bowa was ejected after yelling at Halladay, causing both benches to empty. Bowa was suspended for one game and served it April 8 against Atlanta.

Cormier has denied throwing at Halladay and blamed it on pitching out of the windup for the first time in at least six years.

San Francisco Giants: First baseman Damon Minor was traded to the Phillies for minor league pitcher Mike Wilson.

Minor was batting .234 with eight home runs and 21 RBI in 37 games for Triple-A Fresno. He hit three homers Sunday against New Orleans.

Minor batted .229 with 13 homers in 112 games over parts of three seasons with San Francisco but did not make the big league roster out of spring training this year. He will join the Phillies' Triple-A team at Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

Wilson, a 22-year-old right-hander, was 2-2 with a 3.93 ERA in nine games, including six starts, for Double-A Reading. The 6-foot-7, 235-pound pitcher will join San Francisco's Double-A affiliate at Norwich.
