Padres pitcher Williams has 3 hits in loss

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- After six games without an RBI, Jeff Kent made up for lost time.

Kent hit a three-run homer, raising his league-leading RBI total to 88, to help Kirk Rueter and the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 7-3 Thursday.

"That's just what I do, hit the ball," Kent said. "Sometimes they go south, sometimes they go hard. As long as they go somewhere."

Kent's 24th homer was his first since July 2 and snapped a season-high six-game streak without driving in a run.

Russ Davis also homered for the Giants, who won for the 14th time in 17 games and avoided their first two-game losing streak since losing the last three games of June.

"Woody pitched a great game except to the other Woody," Giants manager Dusty Baker said. "He kept his pitch count down and threw strikes."

Rueter (7-5) won for the fifth time in six decisions, allowing three runs -- one earned -- and five hits in a season-high 7 1/3 innings. Aaron Fultz finished with hitless relief for his first major league save in three chances.

"I don't think I had my best stuff, but I got a lot of ground balls and double plays when I needed," Rueter said. "I felt in command and threw a lot of first pitch strikes."

Woody Williams (4-3) lost for the first time since May 1, a few days before going on the 15-day disabled list with an aneurysm under his right armpit. Williams, making his fourth start since coming off the DL, allowed six runs and six hits in seven innings and struck out six.

"That lineup just keeps coming at you," Williams said. "Kent hit a pretty good pitch. He shouldn't have been able to hit it that far. He's a good hitter. He doesn't lead the league in RBI for nothing."

Williams, who had a career-high three hits, also drove in both San Diego runs with his first career homer. Ruben Rivera reached on Davis' error at third ahead of the homer.

"That doesn't do you any good when you give up six runs," Williams said.

Kent gave the Giants a 3-0 lead in the first after Marvin Benard singled and Barry Bonds walked.

"We haven't scored much in the first inning lately," Baker said. "So it was nice to get going right off the bat."

Williams' homer cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth, but Davis responded with a two-run shot in the bottom half and J.T. Snow singled home a run later in the inning.

Fultz balked in a run in the eighth, but struck out Ryan Klesko with a runner on third to end the inning.

"We have to get these bats going," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "Right now we're counting on pitching and defense until we get the bats rolling again. We have some guys cold right now."

Doug Mirabelli had an RBI single in the eighth off Carlos Almanzar.
