MIAMI (AP) -- Braves left-hander Tom Glavine won at Miami for the first time in five
years and even managed to retire nemesis Mike Redmond once.
Glavine pitched 6 1/3 innings, overcoming
three errors by teammates Thursday as Atlanta beat the Florida Marlins 5-3
in the first game of a doubleheader.
Cliff Floyd broke a seventh-inning tie with a pinch-hit two-run
homer and A.J. Burnett pitched seven innings to win his 2000 debut
as Florida beat Atlanta 6-1 in the nightcap. Antonio Alfonseca
completed the three-hitter with a perfect ninth.

Glavine (11-5) improved to 3-8 in Miami, where he had lost five
consecutive games since beating Florida on May 3, 1995.
"It's been awhile," he said. "You try to approach every game
like it's the first time you've gone out there, and don't worry
about what has happened in the past."
Redmond had two hits and an RBI against Glavine and improved his
career average against the lefty to .722 (13-for-18). But with two
on and Glavine clinging to a 4-3 lead, Redmond ended the sixth with
a flyout.
"I got him out when I had to," Glavine said. "I've thrown him
bad pitches and he's hit them. I've thrown good pitches and he's
hit them. He has certainly gotten the best of me, but I got him out
in a big situation."
There were perhaps a thousand fans in the stands at the start of
the doubleheader, which was necessary because Wednesday's game was
rained out in the fifth inning. Attendance eventually swelled to
28,978, the largest Thursday crowd at Pro Player Stadium since the
Marlins' 1997 World Series championship season.
The biggest cheer of the night came when Derrek Lee greeted John
Rocker with a homer in the eighth inning of the nightcap. The homer
was Lee's 20th.
"It was a great crowd," Marlins manager John Boles said.
"We're very happy that they were for the most part pulling for the
Fish -- at least when we got the lead."
The split ended Atlanta's 6-2 trip on a slightly sour note. The
NL East leaders remained 9½ games ahead of third-place Florida.
"Any time we lose to these guys, it honks me off," Braves
third baseman Chipper Jones said. He declined to elaborate.
In the opener, Florida's Ryan Dempster (9-7) allowed only six
hits in seven innings, but four were for extra bases, including
Reggie Sanders' fifth homer leading off the third. Dempster has
lost his past three starts.
For the second consecutive day, fans booed Atlanta manager Bobby
Cox, who picked Dempster for the National League All-Star team but
didn't use him. Dempster said he has no complaint with Cox, but
he's already looking forward to facing the Braves next week in
Atlanta.
"It's the same game in five days against the same pitcher,"
Dempster said. "They got me today. Hopefully I'll get them next
time."
Glavine won his fourth consecutive start, allowing nine hits and
three runs, two unearned. He improved his career record to 198-121.
A two-run homer by Floyd, his 17th, broke a 1-1 tie in the
seventh inning of the nightcap. A fan in the first row in right
field deflected the ball back onto the field, but it was unclear
from replays whether he reached over the wall. Cox discussed the
ruling with home-plate umpire Jeff Kellogg only briefly.
Cox and Floyd said they couldn't tell whether fan interference
should have been called.
"The umpire hustled out there to make the call," Floyd said.
"I give him credit for that."
Mark Smith's two-run double later in the inning against Scott
Kamieniecki (1-1) made the score 5-1.
Burnett (1-0) allowed one run and three hits in seven innings.
He took an overnight flight from Triple-A Calgary, where he was on
a rehabilitation assignment after recovering from a thumb injury
suffered in spring training.
"I just tried to throw strikes," Burnett said. "Once I
relaxed I was fine."
Wally Joyner's RBI single gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead in the first
inning. Kevin Millar tied the score in the fourth with his 10th
homer.
The Braves' Kevin Millwood allowed only one run in six innings
but remained winless since June 20.
Game notes
Florida RHP Alex Fernandez underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday to tighten a recurrent loose right shoulder capsule. He'll miss the rest of the season. ... Atlanta SS Walt
Weiss left the first game in the sixth inning with a strained right
knee. His status is day to day. ... Because of Wednesday's rainout,
the Braves moved their starters up a day. In this weekend's series
against Houston, Atlanta will start Terry Mulholland on Friday,
Greg Maddux on Saturday and Alan Ashby on Sunday. ... Marlins RHP
Brad Penny, who went on the disabled list Wednesday, was diagnosed
with a slight internal impingement of the right shoulder. The
injury will be treated with exercise and anti-inflammatory
medicine. He's expected to resume throwing in 10 days and rejoin
the rotation in two weeks. ... The doubleheader was the first this
year for both teams. ... Glavine has allowed just one homer by a
left-hander this year. ... Redmond, a catcher, hasn't made an error
this season. ... Florida's Luis Castillo extended his hitting
streak to 12 games.
