TCU's Tomlinson impresses further

Following is an update on the individual workouts of NFL draft prospects:

After being the talk of the NFL combine, TCU RB LaDainian Tomlinson built on that momentum during his individual session (which took place Friday, March 9). He didn't need to clock another 40 or post another vertical leap after his awesome display at the combine, but Tomlinson still managed to turn heads during the various drills he was put through.

Most notable was the show he put on catching the football. Tomlinson reportedly had around 60 or so balls thrown his way, testing his ability to handle routine swing passes or run under passes down the field. In the end, I'm told he dropped just one pass.

Based on his outstanding workout, there should no longer be any doubters that Adam Archuleta can make the successful transition from an OLB spot to SS at the pro level.

Based on all of his accomplishments at TCU, along with his showing at the Senior Bowl practices as well as the combine and individual workouts, there is no doubt in my mind that Tomlinson will hear his name called within the first 10 picks on round one.

TE Todd Heap and SS Adam Archuleta of Arizona State also enjoyed outstanding workouts (also on Friday, March 9). With all 31 teams represented, Heap put on a flawless display of catching the football. He not only hauled in everything thrown his way but also made a couple of exceptional grabs on low throws or passes delivered behind him that required body control and adjustment.

Heap also came through with a 40 time on turf of 4.64 as well as a 36-inch vertical leap. In terms of strength, Heap bench-pressed 225 pounds a total of 19 times. With such an impressive showing, it looks as though Heap has justified the lofty grade I've given him since he declared for the NFL draft following his junior campaign with the Sun Devils.

With it really up in the air and wide open as to who will be the first safety chosen on April 21, Archuleta certainly improved his chances of being that player. On the heels of a tremendously productive final campaign with the Sun Devils, Archuleta needed to prove to the NFL brass that he could make the successful transition from an OLB spot to SS at the pro level.

Based on his outstanding workout, there should no longer be any doubters. After doing 31 reps at the combine, Archuleta completed things by running a blistering 4.37 on turf and also coming through with a 39-inch vertical jump. With numbers like that, it's easy to see why Archuleta was such an explosive performer within the Sun Devils defensive structure. Now a possibility for the Saints in the latter stages of round one, it appears that Archuleta is at worst an early second-rounder.

Schedule for upcoming individual workouts:

Tuesday, March 13 -- Oregon State DE DeLawrence Grant.

Wednesday, March 14 -- Florida DT Gerard Warren (who could end up being the second overall selection to the Arizona Cardinals) and Florida OT Kenyatta Walker (who is battling Texas' Leonard Davis to see who will be the first OT off the board).

Thursday, March 15 -- Clemson WR Rod Gardner will be looking to solidify a position in the mid-late first round area.

Friday, March 16 -- Michigan players will be working out, led by their stellar group of offensive linemen that includes G/T Steve Hutchinson, LT Jeff Backus and OT Maurice Williams.

Wednesday, March 21 -- Purdue QB Drew Brees.
