Moss, Morgan star in Miami workout By Mel Kiper ESPN.com
NFL player-personnel representatives were in Florida on Thursday to work out members of the Miami Hurricanes who are eligible for the NFL draft. Coaches and scouts who were present agree it was one of the most impressive groups they've ever worked out from one school.
Dan Morgan and Santana Moss headed the group and tested extremely well. Wide receiver Reggie Wayne didn't showcase blazing speed but caught the ball exceptionally well. Eight players were tested on the grass in Coral Gables, and the overall results were positive for just about all of them.
Here are the individual numbers and workout results for these prospects:
LB Dan Morgan -- Morgan had an outstanding workout. He measured 6-foot-2 and 242 pounds. He ran the 40 twice, both times clocking a 4.56. Morgan was also able to reach 21 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press and had a vertical leap of 37 inches. He strained his groin and, consequently, wasn't able to complete the entire workout, but his numbers are excellent. Morgan can certainly be expected to go in the mid-first round.
| | Santana Moss was among the most impressive at a workout for Hurricane players. |
WR Santana Moss -- Showed tremendous athletic ability throughout his workout. He was measured at 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds. He showed excellent speed in the 40, clocking a 4.42 on his first try and 4.36 on the second run. He also had a 44-inch vertical jump. He pulled his hamstring and was unable to go through the positional drills, but his speed and athleticism were evident and definitely helped his standing. As a draft pick, Moss is solidly in the mid-first round.
WR Reggie Wayne -- Wayne did not run especially well, coming in at 4.56 and 4.60. He also didn't show incredible explosiveness with a 34½-inch vertical, but nobody expected him to approach Moss' speed numbers anyway. He caught the ball, as we did expect, exceptionally well. Wayne is just a fantastic wide receiver, not a speed merchant. His standing may have dropped to a late first-round or early second-round pick.
DT Damione Lewis -- Physically, Lewis tested extremely well. He measured 6-foot-2 and 292 pounds. He ran a 4.91 and 4.97 in the 40 with a 30-inch vertical jump. Lewis maintained his status as a late first-rounder.
WR Andre King -- King looked good at 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds. He ran a 4.5, which was faster than expected, especially on grass. He showed some explosiveness as well with a 38-inch vertical jump. Notably, King did not drop a pass during the workout. He has moved up from a late-rounder or possible free agent to a fourth-round to sixth-round choice.
DB Leonard Myers -- The cornerback measured 5-foot-10 and 191 pounds. He ran a 4.56 with a 35½-inch vertical. He showed more smoothness and athleticism than expected.
RB James Jackson -- He caught the ball very well but only ran a 4.59 and a 4.62, which did not answer concerns that scouts had about his speed. Any ground he made up showcasing his hands was lost again when he ran. Jackson remains a probable fourth-round selection.
DB Al Blades -- The safety had a nice workout. He ran a 4.66 and solidified his status in the fifth-round area.
Upcoming workouts: Will Allen, March 7; LaDainian Tomlinson, March 9; Freddie Mitchell, March 12; Kenyatta Walker, March 14; Anthony Thomas, March 16; Maurice Williams, March 16; Steve Hutchinson, March 16; Chris Weinke, March 20; Tommy Polley, March 20; Tay Cody, March 20; Drew Brees, March 22.
